The 186-year-old Aldabra's huge tortoise named Jonathan is considered the world's oldest animal, though he first met the love of his life in 1991. After several years of cohabitation, the animal's caretakers concluded that Jonathan might be homosexual, reports ''The Times''.
After 150 years of age, Jonathan became easily irritating and aggressive, the animal decided that it was time to find a partner. Jonathan first met Frederica in 1991 - since then, both animals became inseparable.
One day the veterinarians, whilst examining Frederica, discovered that the animal was a male and not a female turtle as originally thought.
Given the fact that Jonathan and Frederick were very close, they still did not give birth to an offspring. Jonathan's caretakers concluded that the animal could actually be homosexual.
It is much more difficult to distinguish genders between turtles than other animals. Usually, this is determined by the shape of the abdomen and the shell.
Jonathan lives on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. In recent years the animal's health has worsened considerably - it has lost sight can't smell. However, the owners point out that the turtle has a perfect hearing.
