Sad, and I guess it was an eventual thing that was going to happen. I don't see any mention in any other articles about this about other gorillas being taught sign language as well. I would think something like this would promote a lot of experiments and research into the animal kingdom to try to break a language barrier wherever possible.

They did teach a male gorilla Micheal, how to use sign language but he isn't very social. The sad thing is, he told the story of how his mum was shot and killed (for bush meat) when he was a baby.
A bonobo name Kanzi has picked up some sign language but mainly communicate through keyboards .
I did not know that. That is scary and sad that was the outcome of the training itself. It is enlightening though to know what they understand.

It's definitely a shame I wonder if that's why he isn't social. I suppose we'll never know the affect it had on him
