We all have wondered if a fish can drown, even though they live in water. Some toddlers think they save a fish from drowning. But what if they really can drown?
Here is the answer to your lost answer...
Drowning - 'to die or kill by immersion in liquid'
Yes and no. I know it's confusing right?
A fish lives in water, so how can it possibly drown in it's own environment? All fish have gills, and oxygen diffuses into them through it. Yes, fish need oxygen too. When the water that fish live in, does not have enough oxygen in, it causes them to "drown".
Now you ask, but if fish need oxygen, why do they die when out of water too long, there is a whole atmosphere full of oxygen? It's quite simple. In the outside world, their gills become dry and stick together, causing them to suffocate.
You're probably asking, but Megan, if there is oxygen in water, why would I drown trying to breath?
Only because we don't have gills, so we cannot extract the oxygen from the water.
Don't go and try to breath under water, you will fail...
