Ever wondered why dogs chase vehicles on the road? I was curious about this too. So I researched about it to find out.
Turns out, dogs chase cars because it's fun for them. Dogs love the thrill of a chase! They have prey drive. Prey drive is an instinctive behavior in carnivores who need to seek and pursue prey, capture it and eat it. Chase is one of the components of prey drive behavior. Different dog breeds and different individual dogs have different components of the prey drive. Dogs who are good trackers or narcotics dogs have an enhanced seeking component, for example, while shepherd dogs have a high eye-stalk component. Greyhounds, for example, have a very high chase component, while terriers of all kinds have a high grab-bite component. Whether your dog chases balls, squirrels or cars is dependent on the dog. The component is always the same: the instinctual drive to chase something that is getting away from them. The chase instinct is triggered by fast movements.
Another interesting fact-
Have you ever wondered why piss on the tyre of a car?
Because dogs are territorial.
Dogs will piss on the rims of car tires and other objects in their territory to mark it. And the dogs that belong to this territory recognise each other by their scents. So when an alien scent hits them, they become defensive and want to remove the intruder as soon as possible.
