WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE - THE MUSCOVY DUCKLINGS ARE HATCHING

in #animals7 years ago

When we returned from our visit with @mericanhomestead the other day, our fun did not stop!

Upon arriving back at home and checking the animals, I happened to notice something. Our mama Muscovy duck that had been sitting on her eggs had finally gotten a return on her investment. Two of her eggs had already hatched!

At first I thought that one duck and one chick had hatched, because there were a few chicken eggs mixed in and one of the little ones was yellow. However, it just happened to be a yellow duckling, while the other one was more brown.

Muscovy ducks can have quite a variety in coloration including white, brown, black and gray. We have two adults that are black and white and this mama which is gray and white.

We really like these Muscovy Ducks for many reasons. First of all, they were given to us for free by our neighbors so we could start our own flock. Now, they are already reproducing. They mate and brood well on their own, so the process pretty much runs itself and we don't need interfere to have them reproduce.

The mothers take good care of the little ones, and these ducks are excellent foragers. Also, they grow to an impressive size, which means that there will be more meat if you want to eat them. The eggs can also be used for food just like chicken eggs can.

When these reasons are added together, we get a lot of potential for very little effort and investment. Obviously, we enjoy all of our animals, but the Muscovy Ducks are a very welcome addition to our livestock, and these new ducklings have got us excited about the future! We will keep you posted on how many more hatch and how they do growing up.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Nice ones. Off topic: Do you know how to treat a chicken that was bite by a dog? She have one wound in the neck and is very stop

What I'd do is, buy some liquid medication and dab it on a cotton wool. Slowly dab the chicken while feeding her with what she likes.(lots of chickens like cooked rice.)

Hope this helps.

Though if its really bad, stop it from getting infected first or see s vet.

Thank you

you're welcome

Probably kill it and end it's suffering, if it's not ur pet.......

Hahaha, "proof of duckling" so adorable! Ducks are one of my faves (of cute animals I mean) and ducklings are just the freakin best.

Yeah, I love its little expression in that photo!

I know right??!!?? That photo is a gem, thanks for the post :)

How cool and insanely cute are they!!
Congratulations on your wonerful new addition to your family!
Have a stunning duck filled day my friend!

We were just looking at them again a little bit ago. It is hard to avoid the cuteness!

It is indeed!

True story. Several years ago, when I lived in Georgia, someone gave me 14 Muskovy ducks. There were 7 males and seven females. I did not understand at the time that Muskovys can have up to 24 eggs per clutch, three times a year. Within an embarrassingly short timeframe, I had over 100 Muskovy ducks. The hens can perch. I ended up with ducks on the roof, ducks in the trees, ducks on the fence, ducks on the cars, ducks on the neighbors cars, ducks on the neighbors roof, ducks in the road, ducks everywhere. It was a problem. Took us forever to find homes for all those ducks. I think some of their descendants may still live at a neighbors pond. Natural predation has kept him from having the same disaster that we did.

Have any more eggs hatched? Please post some new pictures. We love you all.

Not last we checked. Maybe we will post some fishing pictures today.

Later we will go to the turtle races!

I have to get my fix of homesteading from others......thank you much!!!!

At least you can! We will keep you fixed up!

you see duckies are good, because not only do they give you that non-threatening sense of security, but you can feed them crackers and you can ride them. Duckies are the horsies of the ocean

Papa,
I had been looking at getting Muscovy ducks but found a deal on some White Pekins that I couldn't pass up. Since then I have been offered some free Magpie Ducks as well. I had heard that Muscovies are extremely adept at eating mosquitoes, have you experienced that with your ducks? Also, how many eggs do your ducks produce in an average week? Thanks for the continued great posts. I tried to emulate you a bit when we had an endangered Blandings Turtle visit the homestead yesterday. I don't think I did you justice.

Oh YES!!! Ducks are th #1 livestock that I "want" on my homestead. Might not be the 1st we get, but they are what I want the most. Just love watching the little ducks waddle around. Talking quack quack quack. 😀

Have you followed Jack Spirko on The Survival Podcast, and his duck farm? In fact I am surprised that Jack isn't on Steemit. Maybe he is and I am just not aware of it.

Yay ducks!

so dern stinking cute lol-love duckies!

-:) awww lovely

wowowowowwo

I know how you feel!

i really appreciate what youre doing, teaching young kids how to have these sorts of responsibilities at such a young age is so important..community is everything....

What a great gift!!! Nature is a beautiful thing! I don't believe I have eaten any Muscovy Ducks before. Can't wait to follow the ducklings as they grow up!

A flock can grow at an incredible rate so we will see what happens.

I bet the kiddos have a blast with the little ducks!

if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck ..... it is a DUCK ...

Duck, duck.... duck. No goose right now...

Nice man, new life, natures finest! Those ducks certainly got looks!

They are really cute. We will have to see how many other ones hatch and do a photo shoot with the @little-peppers!

That would be awesome! Instantly following that account as well!

I have heard Muscovy ducks are quieter than chickens or even other ducks. Is that so?

Yeah, they kind of only seem to hiss a little bit. They certainly do not wake us up by crowing at 3:30am!

Such an amazing life you live, as far as I can see. But you deserve it. Keep up with it ! Big papa =D

We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, be we believe that we are heading the right direction at least! Thanks for the encouragement!

so papa-pepper its dad again? XD and for the best proof u should have put duck face XD

Now you tell me. That would have been fun!

They are even cuter than baby chicks! Here's to hoping our ducks try again soon.

I hope yours do too. Also, ours could still be snake food, so we will have to keep them safe!

We really need to finish our project to get them 100 percent safe. Think the snake snatched up the chicken eggs too which were even raised up off the ground. That's gotta be one fat and sassy snake.

Nice one papa-pepper ! Eggs hatching , exciting.
Real eggs hatching not like the ones in Pokémon Go lol

We prefer this kind of egg, it is still exciting! (egg-citing)

nice sharing

Congrats on your new arrivals.

Your Muscovys are much prettier than our black/white/green & red ones.

They looked like someone spilled paint on them.

Cute!

Here, have a cold one on me.

Thanks for that! Beautiful duck!

They are adorable, want one as well.

Congrats on the baby duckling! Thanks for sharing!

haha wow i love ducks and the duck in the final proof picture loves to be a duck.

Nice, how many eggs does a duck lay?

Omg that's so cute :0

Upvoted!

very adorable !! will follow !

Omg they are sooo cute 😍

love the pic of mom'ma and duckling......quick question are you keeping ducks as egg/protein source or just to keep ducks...thanks for the post

All of the above, ducks to sell, ducks to eat, eggs to eat, animals to enjoy

Thanks for sharing this. We really enjoy duck eggs and some people who are allergic to chicken eggs can eat duck eggs without issue. 🙌 We are considering getting ducks in the future. I look forward to your updates. ☺

Cool, we like these eggs too, and do not have any allergies, but it is good to have multiple options anyway.

Good job mama duck!!

She is doing a GREAT job! Thanks!

Oh my Gosh the little fluffmeisters!!! I need to one day be able to afford a country cottage where I have enough room for ducks of my own, grow my own veg and be the proud owner of a big hairy doggy called Bill

Have your Muscovys killed any snakes? Ive always heard they do but never met anyone who had some snake killin ducks.

haha this is so damn cute.
Great Photos by the way

aawww they are so cute, what a lot of wonderful animals you got there. How is the little guinea fowls doing?

A big welcome to these babies!

The last Muscovy Ducks we had decided to build a nest at the top of our chimney. At least I think that is why they were up there. Their descent down the elevator shaft involved quite a rescue operation due to a fireplace insert being in place. They had to be airlifted to safety. I wish you and yours a better experience!

They look so cute! I'm glad they're finally hatching and healthy. Who would've thought to get a yellow one?? That's so awesome. Thanks for keeping us updated :)

yay you!
I had similar experiences when I kept Muscovies on the Llano Estacado back in the day.

They look so cute. Enjoy the free ducks and their free ROI.

We sure are! Thanks!

Owl to see eggs hatch and little ones come to the world.
My 3 chicks also grow, 1 cock and 2 chickens. But it is so hot at the moment that the little ones have to go all the lawn to find a food.
A little rain will do us good.
Bravo and show us your other animals.

Lovely l do like birds, I managed to get a good photo of a young gold finch the other day. I fact I think it's the best photo I've put on my blog . Thanks for your article cheers mike
