some mind blowing facts from the animal kingdom

in #animals7 years ago (edited)

Meet one of the most invulnerable animals on our planet:

The Tardigrade.

It is 1.5mm long and can withstand extreme conditions unlike any other animal:

They can survive:

    A few minutes at 151 °C (304 °F)
    30 years at −20 °C
    A few days at −200 °C
A few minutes at −272 °C (absolute zero is -273.15!)
    ***Extreme*** high and low pressure.
    1000x normal animal radiation tolerance.

(Horikawa, Daiki D (2012). Survival of Tardigrades in Extreme Environments)

Tardigrades also survived 10 days of exposure in space and years without water. (Let this part sink in for a second.)

Scientists believe the atmospheric conditions required to cause Tardigrade extinction would be so extreme that they’d be one of the last living organisms on this planet.

The Oceans would need to literally boil.

Cockroaches got nothing on Tardigrades, these guys would laugh if you used bug spray on them.

Everyone Dies except Tardigrades.
