Today's Favorite!
Ask me on any given day and I'll probably have a different answer. It's hard being an animal lover and a farmer with over 200 animals. I have so many animals to love on that all of them get a chance to be my favorite at some point or another. But right now at this point, I have a very strong pull for my favorite. She is my beautiful new Nubian goat kid, Fern. You see, she may be less than a week old but she pretty much saved me from certain doom the minute she was born!
Those eyelashes!!!
You see I was sliding down into a low spot in my life and kinda getting stuck there... We had the hardest summer anyone could imagine with our beautiful goat herd. (IF you want to read about that here are the links... first post , second post , third post ) I was down, I was broken, I was depressed and I had very little hope left in me. I felt very empty from the losses we accumulated one after another like dominoes falling, they were toppling me over with them.
I literally COULD NOT bare another loss!
The one glimmer of hope I kept clinging to was that one of my goats was due to kid. New life was desperately needed! It also scared me a little, I was afraid something bad would happen during labor or that they would get sick. I held my breath for two weeks while she went past the due date I had marked, obviously that mating I witnessed was not successful and they re-tried two weeks later. That is when my sweet Fern came into this world, bursting open my heart! So much love flowed out of me that I was sobbing with relief that she was here, and she was alive!
This picture was taken moments after she was born, while I sobbed!
This sweet girl and her twin brother, Juniper, have quite a legacy to fulfill! Their older sisters, Sugar and Spice were two of the four goats we had lost this summer. They are filling some very special spots in our herd and our hearts! With their birth, they bring new life, not just their own, not just to the herd, but to ME! I have been refilled with joy and light where once gloom and darkness had filled. I could finally breathe again!
That smile!
This sweet little girl was just the medicine my soul needed! It's funny how when we think that we are never going to be happy again and are at our very worst we can be given such a gift as this! The gift of LIFE! Of RENEWAL! And I can finally remember what HAPPY feels like!
Nothing like baby goat snuggles to warm your heart and soul!
While it goes without saying, baby goats are incredibly cute and can really make anyone happy, this one did so much more than that. SHE SAVED ME! So, for today at least, while I write this, Fern is my favorite animal!
