African Golden Weaver

in #animalsunday6 years ago (edited)

African Golden Weaver - Ploceus subaureus - With striking red eyes and red legs is what led me to identifying this bird in my garden.

Weaver birds of all shapes and sizes arrive along our coastline, some presenting a rich golden green plumage, others have masked black faces, so here goes I really hope my identification is correct on this regular visitor.

Along the East Coast a sub-tropical region, friendly visitors in the garden, keeping an eye on berries in trees, insects available or a free meal from the feeder of seeds, brown bread or brown rice healthier option.

African Golden Weaver

African Golden Weaver Bright red eye watching, black beak nibbling a piece of bread held firmly in the foot, a bird found in some regions in Africa. Nesting in ball-shaped nests a colony up in trees.

[MapSource:

African Golden Weaver

For a short period she had the feeder all to herself, enjoying her early morning breakfast before the crowds swooped in.

Weavers

When next you look up into the tree there are almost more birds than leaves, a gusto of collective chirping, collecting pieces of bread they will fly into the adjacent bush to quietly eat away in peace. If one drops the food, it is a free for all with others bickering to get the morsel. This may be a mixture of different weavers.

Weaver Birds

Male among the females, breeding males are distinguished by black bill and red eye, female is duller yellow, has a horn to dark bill, eye is brown or reddish brown.

Weaver Birds Flight

Bread is finished, most have flown away, this male and two females departed after all the rest, perhaps they are two of his local harem taking a well earned rest.

@joanstewart Weavers always gang up at the feeders and smaller birds have a hard time to compete. We feed wild bird seed and fruit such as apple and pawpaw peels, which draw a wide variety of birds. To keep the weavers away Marian feeds them lumps of her morning porridge which they go gaga over. Blessings!

Seed, bread or rice in one feeder, fruit goes into another area of the garden for monkey's and birds, we try to keep monkey's further away from the house.

Sadly this is a lost cause they raid everything lately with a huge tract of land being stolen for development, now they try enter the house as well, quick to learn and hungry.

Never seen birds with red eyes before.
Thanks for sharing!

Other weavers have red eyes, this one confused me with pink/red legs and much more green in colour @joelai

But still stunning as the rest...

I love birds and most expecially the colored ones....

These always tend to arrive together and have lovely markings and colours a pleasure to watch.

they are gorgeous!

i dont think our backyard ever got visited by colorful birds, always only sparrows :D

#steemitbloggers

Cape Sparrow is another regular in our garden @thekitchenfairy we refer to them as a Mossie which is Afrikaans name for the bird.

The picture of the group of birds waiting to eat in the morning reminds me of the birds around my place in the fall nesting at night in the trees nest to my house until the leaves come down. Kryptonia @richard78624

Having the song of birds close is always a treat @richard78624

People also make soups from the nests of those birds, don't they? Probably not a very kind thing to do, but I think I read about that somewhere via Kryptonia by @daytondoes

Never heard of that happening over here, I heard the Fish Eagle will take eggs out of nests, however have never witnessed that happen either @daytondoes

I might be thinking of something different... Just looked it up. I'm talking about swifts. Not weavers.

Regardless, here is a box of swift nests being sold in China for almost $900. I'm in the wrong business lol

Would not have the heart to go out raiding nests for personal gain, interesting though, yes we possibly in the wrong trade by just loving our environment.

Lovely birds and a nice story. I have some shots of these birds. Maybe you will help me distinguish the male and the female. Lol

Male is more yellow, sometimes black on the face during mating season, with black bill @abbiephoto

Unique shots i love birds and i have a canary and i'm about to bring him a bride LOL, thanks for sharing and happy sunday ♥️

Great publication, those little birds are very nice, you are very lucky to visit your yard! kritonia ID @sughey

We have planted thick bushy areas for the birds to enjoy coming into the garden and having somewhere to escape into for security @sughey does not help for my photography, the minute they see me they hide.

Hermosas fotografias, me gustaron mucho, gracias por deleitarnos con tanta belleza natural

Las aves en la naturaleza son maravillosas para ser testigos, gracias por visitarnos @mariale07

oh those adorable little terrors used to destroy all my palms in my garden, but they are cute!

We have many palms in our garden and around our area, young males practice nest building on phone lines which is fun to watch. When the wind comes up the nests run up and down the lines like cable cars or zip line.

I love the different kind of birds that exist they are very important in our lives. Kryptonia ID @mejia_martinez

Thanks for visiting @me2017 imagine a life without the smaller animals..

You are welcome! Yeah you are right animals are part of our lives.

I love bird watching. I don’t know how you can take so accurate pictures, they move so fast. Congrats on this post, I enjoyed it, you should win the contest! @starjewel via Kryptonia

When they first arrive they sit together in a gang and chat before popping down to eat, in flight photography is hit and miss @starjewel

Oh, so beautiful!

Thanks @uniwhisp

African gold weaver is beautiful. Very nice combination of colours green and red makes it very beautiful. I feel very pleasant in watching birds. Even though I live in city I tend to put grains on the terrace of my house so that they can stay some time at my place.

Soothing to watch them going about their daily business, even in the city they will find the food you put out @kcherukuri

funny bird..the are a bit more color then in norway..lol...to cold so no color.

Each region offers unique species, would love to see some birds up north @norwegianbikeman

Nice birds. I think due to deforestation most of the common birds are facing difficulty to survive with us.

If you have a garden plant trees to invite birds in, we have two trees that offer berries attracting birds that feed on berries and monkeys of course.

Really its a great idea. I will try it.

Wow, they are beautiful! Must be nice to see them around.

Lovely to watch them eat, take a piece of bread in their feet and sit on a branch quietly nibbling away.

Great post, we are lucky to live next to the countryside, even had a family of goldfinches living in a box I put up in the garden.

We tried an owl house box, it did not work with monkeys around.

Great photography. These birds are really camouflage.

They move in and out the garden periodically throughout the day @dhanu4u

It is always interesting to learn something new. Thank you for Your story. I see that this is not a very common species of birds and they are not too large habitat. Are they a rare species? Thank you for the interesting photos.

Not on any endangered list so flourishing in areas they live in @madlenfox

What beautiful and interesting birds :) Thanks for sharing your photos of them, I really enjoyed them.

Thanks for visiting @youhavewings

Though i care about animals but i have never felt close to bird. May be because they are far of the sky.

Best to leave them free @blogjeremiah

i love birds

Beautiful pictures and so informative thanks! I have also recently started paying more attention to the birds around me and also setup a bird feeder in my garden :) we went to the botanical gardens the other day and I was amazed at how quickly the birds joined us for our picnic! I think that they are hungry- not enough easy pickings out in nature yet :P

Feeders in the garden attracts them, they definitely know how to enjoy a free meal @wildwanderer

Wow, you re real a good narator. I remeber this bird very well while in village before moving to the city. I love them and they re quite a good noise makers, i love their colors and it amaze me how organize they re. During the time of harvest, like rice they would all disappear to no where and suddenly come back again after their travel...haha. I love them very much. @fisherman

Yes they raid seeds and fruits and move on @peterecheng thanks for visiting

Beautiful birds! Thank you for the information Joan. Every day is a school day :)

Nature teaches many lessons, take time to enjoy every day.

I love birds, I must say this one is very interesting, especially the red eyes!

Makes them look tough @roselifecoach thanks for visiting.
