You may have come across the word Anime from TV, Ads or your friends and family. Some people regard Anime as for losers, it's for babies and would not even dare say the word. I am here to put your ignorance away.
Anime is an abbreviation of the western word "animation" and regarded by many as a Japanese animation. In the western world, animation is a term for a series of drawings put together in sequence. In the Japanese culture, Anime is an animation but with different kinds of drawing techniques and genres.
Genres
Kodomo
For the kids, no matter the sex. Be it boy or girls and it's usually very childish in stories.
Shounen
Boys club only at high school age. This genre usually tell stories of fighting, friendships with lots of humor.
Shojo
This genre is aimed at high school girls. Shows typically contain beauty, emotions and relationships. All the mushy lovey stuff.
Seinen
It is for manly men at the age over 18. This genre can be very broad as, ecchi, hentai can also be regarded as Seinen.
Josei
Similar to Seinen but for females.
Harem
As the name suggests, it is about a character surrounded by beautiful ladies at his disposal.
Echhi
This genre is one for the adults. It is a show with a slight nudity and sex scenes. Won't show the full monty but you get the gist of it. The next genre is the one you want to see if you want to go a step further from ecchi.
Hentai
Literally means 'pervert' in Japanese. You can probably call this genre porn because of its full blown content.
Lolicon
Young children shown in a very sexual manner.
Yaoi
For gay boys.
Yuri
For gay girls.
As you can see, in Japan, Anime is not just Anime. There are different kinds and it's a very big industry.
Walking around Japan in an Anime character costume is not so bad and is very much welcomed. You do it in the Western world and people will think you are a crazy weirdo.
