Kouta Hirano is the writer and illustrator behind the success of Drifters (Dorifutazu in Japanese), an action fantasy manga. The series was first introduced in Shonen Gahosha’s Young King Ours magazine in 2009. The first season of Drifters was aired between October and December 2016. If you love watching war and adventure, then this series is perfect for you. Many potent individuals are transported from their world to an unknown world. They have formed these groups here so that they can destroy the war troops that are dangerous for human habitation. The group formed here is named drifters probably because they are drifted away from their land. The series is full of war and adventures that these drifters go through as the rivals that they have to fight has dragons and demons as their team.
Drifters Plot:
During the Battle of Sekigahara, Shimazu Toyohisa manages to wound Li Naomasa but also gets critically injured himself. He walks away from the battlefield, bleeding. He is suddenly transported into a long corridor with many doors. He finds a man wearing spectacles waiting for him there, at a desk. In due course, Shimazu finds out his name, Murasaki, who leads him through the nearest door. When he wakes up, he is in a different world. He soon meets other warriors like himself, who have been transported through various doors to this world. They all are sent here to be a part of the group, “Drifters”.
This new world is inhabited by various creatures such as native humans, hobbits, elves, and dwarves. Other than these, there is an opposing group of creatures “Ends” who seem to have a leading hand in the war. Their aim is to take over the world and destroy the life that has inhabited it. The Ends have monstrous creatures such as dragons and giants who can easily destroy anything standing in their way.
Initially, the Ends reign over the Northern part of the continent and are trying to smartly invade the southern territories. The ‘Octobrist Organization’ meanwhile finds as many individual Drifters with magical powers to come together to save the world from the brutal destruction that will take place.
Fans have been waiting for the second season as they cannot help but be curious about who is going to win the battle. The series is interesting because it is not a normal battle, it is a battle between humans and demons for the establishment of humans or non-humans. The victory team will get to decide that.
Drifters Characters:
Drifters: are a group of heroes, warriors and great leaders from various timelines and cultures who are brought to the world which is under threat from the Ends. The Drifters all have a hardcore history of violence, conquest, and victory and they do not tolerate it when innocents are harmed. The Drifters lean on tenacity and technology to survive and protect the world from destruction. They are drifted from their native land so that the could save the world. The drifters’ group consists of various kind of creatures. They are trying to form a strong troop so that they can win against Ends.
Ends: The antagonistic forces and monstrous creatures that are planning to destroy the world so that they can reign over a new world are the ‘Ends’. They are powerful ancient creatures who had died painfully and violently. The Ends have shrugged off their humanity and possess supernatural powers that they use for the sole purpose of destroying the world. Their intense hate for humanity keeps them going. Their troop consists of dragons and demons who can destroy humans with a snap of their fingers.
Murasaki: Is a calm and silent man who is trying his best to bring in Drifters and gather them. He uses the Drifters to right all the wrong that is happening in the world. He is always portrayed as sitting at a desk in the long corridor, smoking a cigar and reading the newspaper from which he gets his information. He is associated with the light and right. Even, he is not human. He was dead a long time ago in a battle and was bought into this unknown world. He is the head of the whole drifter’s crew.
Easy: He is a young short-tempered man who is on the side of the Ends. He can produce water and life unlimitedly. He is the reason that the group as devilish as the Ends was formed. He is much more technologically advanced than Murasaki. As Murasaki is associated with light, Easy is associated with darkness.
Black king: He is the head that leads the Ends troop. His hatred towards humans was born when they denied his efforts of saving humanity. Similar to Easy, Black King can produce unlimited food and wood. He changes his form to any living being. He seems much more powerful than drifters. His only aim is to destroy humans and humanity. He wants to create a world where humans don’t exist at all. This will be his revenge against humans.
Nasu no Yoichi (VA: Mitsuki Saiga in Japanese and Justin Briner in English): A man of nineteen years, he possesses somewhat feminine characteristics. He is named Nasu Suketaka Yoichi and is said to have a hundred years prior to Nobunaga and Toyohisa were born. He is the youngest of all.
Episode 12 of season 1 didn’t do much to tease the next season. It made for a good conclusion to the season but gave no hints as to whether a second season could be expected. However, the final episode ends with a message that read, “To be continued second season. See you again. Tokyo 20XX. Sayonara.”
Drifters Season 2 has been renewed for a second season, set to premiere sometime in 2019, but we can’t confirm this until an air date is announced. The last episode of season 1 was aired in December 2016. The long time-lapse between the final episode and the recent renewal sent fans into a tizzy, not knowing whether to expect a second season or not. The first season made a positive impression on the viewers who are hoping to hear more news and announcements soon. Fans interested in Drifters should also catch the OVA, Drifters: The Outlandish Knight.
