Antshares (Paper) Wallet (Public Address and Private Key)

in #antshares8 years ago (edited)

I want to share some information about Antshares (= ANS) that I gathered the last few days and which were very useful to me. I hope it will help some of you too, who have the same questions I had.

This post is not about recommending to invest in Antshares. Maybe I will write about the investing aspect some time in the future.

I want to make clear that I am in now way connected to the Antshares Development Team or something similiar. I am just an ordinary guy that is interested in cryptocurrencies.

Now to the problem I had. As most people know, it is not recommended to store your cryptocurrency coins on exchanges like poloniex, bittrex and so on. Normally theres is an easy way available to create a public key (= public address) an the corresponding private key (WIF, ...), so that the coins bought at an exchange can be transferred to such an address and stored there savely (as long as you don't lose your private key or someone else gets to know your private key).

Well, my problem was, that I wasn't able to find that for Antshares. But after some time I found a way and I want to share that with you. These are the steps:

  1. Download the Antshare Core from their homepage here https://www.antshares.org/en-us/Download/Index (it is only available for Windows!)

  2. Install it and when you run it for the first time you come to this window:

  3. Click on "Wallet" and then "New Wallet Database". Choose a place for it to be saved on your harddisk and type in a passwort that you remember.

  4. After that is done you will see an address that was created in the antshares blockchain.

  5. Right click on that created address and then on "view private key". Write that information down and don't loose it and don't give it to anyone else.

  6. Then you have to wait that the Antshares Core syncs with the blockchain. You can see that on the bottom left of the following snapshot:

At that time there were 902304 blocks on the blockchain and all synchronized in my Antshares Core Programm. It took about 3 hours until it was all synched.

  7. To test the address you can now send a small amount of Antshares you own to the address that was created before (where you right clicked to get to the private key).

  8. Because only when there was an transaction with that address does this address show up on the antshares blockchain explorer.

  9. Blockchain Explorers for the antshares blockchain is here https://www.antchain.xyz/ or here http://antcha.in/ . When you made an transaction with the address you created you can type that address in one of those two antshares blockchain explorers und you will find the amount of ANS you sent to that address there.

So this is the way I wanted to explain on how you can transfer ANS from exchanges to your on private wallet. I hope this was helpful to you. Let me know if this worked for you or if you have other questions and I will try to answer them.

Best whishes!

P.S. When the ANS are stored in the way I described above, you get also the benefit, that you get AntCoins (not AntShares!) credited. You can see the amount in the Tab "Asset" and then "Balance". And by the way: your antshares are save in the antshares blockchain even if you delete the antshares core from your computer. All you need is the public address and your private key! Further information about AntShares and AntCoins can be found here in the white paper: https://github.com/AntShares/AntShares/wiki/Whitepaper-1.1

Very helpful. Kind of a paper wallet of sorts.

Do I understand this correctly? To send AntShares from the exchange to the wallet, I only put in the address from my wallet. I don't need the public or private keys?

Yes you would only need your private keys to import your wallet coins any time from a console

Yes thats right, just as yousri already answered.

Well, I got through putting my ANS into my Antshares Core wallet. Scared the heck out of me. Bittrex charges 1 whole coin to transfer coins (about $10 at the time). I didn’t want to lose two coins transferring, so I transferred the whole thing. Now understand, my coins are 2,100% up from when I bought them and my heart was racing wanting to get them off the exchange. I sent the coins using my address and not the private/public keys. After thirty minutes, Bittrex stated that the transaction went through, but nothing was happening on the AntShares Core wallet. It took 3.5 hours to finally make it to my wallet. I couldn’t sleep until it went through. I tell you, that was the most stress I’ve had in a long time.

You could have put your public address in at https://www.antchain.xyz/ and would have seen immediately (after bittrex stated that the transaction went throug) that the amount was transferred to the ANS Blockchain and your public address. I described that above. The wallet is just needed to create a public address with a private key. After that you could delete it. Just wanted to make that clear. Yes it is right, that the wallet needs 3,5 hours to synch (if it is installed for the first time), but the transaction itself is very fast and can be seen on the ans blockchain immediatly.

Had the same with https://app.antshares.org/ and still the amount is not there. That's pissing me off.

This seems very similar to the litecoin core setup which is very easy to setup on a new pc. Great info, thanks.Have a good one!

I have stored my ans in the webwallet but my anc is still 0. do you know why is that?

Hello luciusfang10, I think you just have to wait until the wallet synched all blocks with the blockchain. I guess by now you can see them.

When did you receive your kryptos in the end?

Has anyone else used this wallet? Is this secure?

Hello,
But the private keys are always there, Is it secure and why do I have to write it down and keep it if its always there. Is it only so if I deleted the core wallet I can access it again. Is there a way I can hide this private keys or only to delete the whole wallet? Thanks for your article and appreciate your input.

Hello yousri, I am no Antshares or cryptocurrency expert. I guess it is quite secure, but if you want to be sure then delete the whole wallet after you created and saved your private and public key. You get the ANC anyway and need the wallet only to transfer the ANS.

Thanks Frank. I appreciate it.

Appreciate you listing these steps, frank77. I was nervous about sending my AntShares without seeing something within their wallet that read along the lines of "Receive Address". The crypto world can be a dangerous place. Thanks again! -A

Yes I know what you mean. Thats why I recommended to just transfer a little amount of ANS to the wallet (public address) first and see if it works. After that you can transfer the rest of the ANS.

Thanks for posting this, I wasn't even aware of it. I hate leaving anything on an exchange.

it has to be synced first right?

yust see my answer to shamgar I made some minutes ago.

Thanks for sharing!

Do you know how to send from the ANS wallet to an exchange and how long the transaction time is?

Nice article. Thanks a lot it's exactly what I needed.

So, people on Mac are screwed I guess. Can't you just make a generic paper wallet from a wallet generator?

Yesterday I came into trouble... I was sending NEO to my https://app.antshares.org/ address but till today none of the transfered NEOs are showing up. This is extremely annoying as it was not a small amount. Let's see if the devs reply to my support request.
