Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is a very common thing for people to struggle with and so you're not alone in the least. Unfortunately social anxiety or anxiety in general aren't things that ever go away completely. Instead we learn to manage our responses to those feelings. Often this takes place by working with a therapist or through experiences.

Because of the nature of feelings and how we can't really tell how another is feeling it is difficult to say exactly how common anxiety of one form or another is. With that said there's lots of successful people who have social anxiety right the way up to billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg supposedly. I was a music teacher for a looong time and personally know many fantastic but anxious musicians right the way up to people working on the West End in London. Without wanting to get into the realms of toxic positivity etc. there also lots of folks who get better from social anxiety (acknowledging that some is normal or even desired). You're still only in your second year of uni and it's not like the die is cast even years after graduating either. There's no need to panic.

As a places to start I'm going to suggest a few things;

  1. Get your basics in order. That's diet, exercise, hygiene, environment and talking to actual people IRL (even if it's just superficially)

  2. Look for additional support from uni and follow their advice

  3. Start a hobby with some kind of social aspect - It could be nerdy like D&D or ultra thrill seeking like dynamite spear fishing

  4. Have a listen to the 'Feeling Good Podcast' by Dr Burns and check out the book 'When Panic Attacks' by the same chap. He is the grandaddy of CBT and gives out a lot of information as a good starting point
