My theory is that an apocalyptic event would force us to live like the humans we were before the modern age arrived and therein lies the attraction. Our DNA still holds true to who we were hundreds of years ago as we pillaged, lived in smaller tribes, and did focused all of our energy on surviving. This provides a subconscious draw to the lifestyle we have left behind.
