Can our privacy and the future of advertising be influenced by Apple's Face ID?

in #apple7 years ago (edited)

Since the recent reveal of Apple's new iPhone, the iPhone X, potential buyers and consumers have shown skepticism towards it's Facial recognition. Many have raised questions on the potential of Face ID being used against them, whether it be used to cripple their privacy or used to influence advertisements. As farfetched as it seems, it's completely possible as it's been done on a larger scale. Hidden cameras and cameras integrated on displays have been and can be equipped with facial recognition technology. That means information can be collected on how a consumer responds to the advertisement and what age, race, ethnicity or gender the target is. Commonly, people fitting under a similar category (age, race, etc.) will have similar interest; advertisers/owners can tailor information displayed based on this.
Now, apply this to a mobile device using this technology. What you see, read, and interact with could ultimately be influenced by this development. Result and ad personalization is nothing new, yet, this could potentially be the next step. Virtual reality could also utilize this technology, as Google loves their ads. Imagine watching 360 degree YouTube and being forced to watch an ad, you turn your head or close your eyes to wait and the ad pauses. It's all possible, but maybe I've just been wearing a Tinfoil hat for too long. What's your thoughts on Apple's new, 'full-proof' and secure authentication method?
