MeadowCroft Rock shelter .... HolySmoke! ... The Oldest "Human use site in North America"

in #archaeology7 years ago (edited)

Meadowcroft Rock Shelter in Washington County Pennsylvania, is an Archaeological dig site, that was used as a Shelter by Paleo-indians over 16,000 years ago !!

It is believed that the Massive rock overhang was used in Ancient times by people traveling from one settlement to the next.. Since it was not used for permanent habitation.. Travelers stayed there on a very short term basis; they would have needed a place to shelter while they restocked food and provisions during their long journeys..

These are original Photos of my trip there .. No reuse allowed without permission...

Below is a photo of the dig site.

Over time parts of the overhang have fallen and were removed..

This Monongahela Indian village is a recreation of a 16th Century Indian Village that centered on Agricultural life Style, as well as hunting, and fishing.. .. I was able to try my hand at the Atyl-atyl, an ancient Spear thrower..

Both ends of the posts were burnt to slow decomposition from bugs and weather..

In addition to the Rock-shelter, and the 16th century Monongahela indian village visitors to Meadowcroft can also experience Rural life over the past 500 years through a whole series of interpretive villages, an 18th century log cabin and trading post, and a 19th century village that includes an authentic Church, a one-room Schoolhouse, and a Blacksmith shop.

If you decide to take a trip to Meadowcroft , plan on spending at least 4 hours there; because there is a lot to see and experience. I took my little family there with my Cousin who was visiting from Italy, she is actually an Archaeologist (although she does not work in that field due to it's part-time work, and low pay)... ..

Signs of Our Paleo Ancestors are all across America .... Here is a Post by a user who knows a whole lot more about Paleo-indians than i do ... Great post and its so nice to see that you are writing about archaeology and history. We should have more people like you here on Steemit. Its really funny as reading about archaeology and artifacts i remember that when i was little i wanted to be an archaeologist and during the summer time when i was visiting my grandparents at the country side i always was digging hoping i will find treasures and great artifacts. Keep the great blogs coming and Steem on!

Thanks for the Encouragement Brother ..! it means a lot... esp. in these trying times.. The Greatest thing about being a Kid was the sense of Discovery.. Luckily that's something we can still enjoy today... That and Ice Cream!! ..
i Love Ancient History the most... It has been said that we are a species with Amnesia.. So much was lost when the Library of Alexandria was burned.. There were books about the global Civilization that came before this one.. Lost to the ice Age .. Just a slight Tap on the Reset button... but; Don't let me get Too Deep ..
