Good stuff even though I have never played any of these games you gave a good little look at them.

All of them really start to push the boundaries of what it means for computer gaming to be a genre, definitely worth it if you are interested in gaming!

Wing Commander

I tell you what: I totally agree that the stories on these were.... mediocre, but this game was the first game that made me upset when an NPC wingman died, so they got something right. Or maybe I was just upset because now I’d have to down the Kilrathi cruiser alone 😆

Ha ha, well, I guess annoyance is also an emotional reaction! I really miss those Full Motion Videos! I should find them again on YouTube, to remind myself that they were quality and not corny as all hell!

Resteem’d! I like this post, Bengy, and I absolutely share yer sentiments about Gone Home.

Anyways, if we’re on the topic of sharing emotion-impacting games: Undertale (all routes, but I did Pacifist Neutral and True Pacifist only), Doom 2016 (here’s to Doom Eternal!), A Hat in Time (here’s to their upcoming DLC!), PayDay 2 (coop and singleplayer mode) and Sam&Max (Telltale’s game). I, as an eclectic gamer, love them to death and love how they present their gameplay and story. And having all that while still having gravitas in the gaming sphere, even after postmortem.

I loved Undertale for helping push the boundaries of choices and story in the indie genre. Doom 2016 for reminding me of the Dooms and Quakes, their clones and having subtlety in their story-telling that makes you justify the Dæmon slayin’ yah are doin’. A Hat in Time for rekindling the indie 3D platformers where Yooka-Laylee failed, while still being a cute-as-heck-3D-platformer. PayDay 2 for its expansion of heisting, inclusion of stealth and multiple roles for a player to possibly fill and making coop-multiplayer a thing worth experiencing even if you like to play solo. And finally Sam&Max for being TellTale’s magnum opus and the foundations for their own Walking Dead game to have legs to stand upon (yes this game, Sam&Max, is basically TellTale’s own Doom to their Wolfenstein 3D, that being Bone actually).

Gone home was a stunning game, I was surprised that it such a bad reaction during the Gamergate times. But I guess those are the growing pains in the development of a new genre.

I've heard good things about Undertake, I have it, but haven't tried it yet. I see it is coming out on Switch, I think it will be a better fit for me there.

I enjoyed a few Seasons of the Sam and Max reboot but I stopped after a while. I guess the humour started to be too similar after a while. Maybe I should finish them off now that I've had a break from them!,

And I have played nine of these. I have been really impressed with Detroit Become Human that is quite an innovative game, and we are both looking forward to the new Spider-Man game.

Not bad, 9 out of 5! Ha ha, , but I guess you meant none...

Detroit I haven't heard of, console or PC? I'm afraid I'm a PC master racer...,

Stupid phone autocorrects. We have it on PS4 not sure if it is on PC but it’s a good game.

Just looked it up... Exclusive... Pity, looks pretty awesome!

I am not really a good player... I don't call myself a gamer... Coz so far I have only managed to finish one game, Final Fantasy X2. And currently I am playing The Royal Chaos... It's been about two months now I am playing this... Not sure for how long I will keep playing... I get bored playing the same game after some time... no patient in levelling up... 😅😅😅

I've never managed to complete a Final Fantasy! I find the grind of levelling in the Jrpg genre to be too much for me... So you are ahead of me in that respect!

I have not heard of Royal Chaos though... What platform is it on?

It's a role playing app I play on my phone. I am surprised I can manage to finish that FFX2. Maybe I was bored during that school holiday...

Ya FFX is one I would put on a emotional level love story with a not happy ending that is untill FFX2 that is funny that you only played that one. Gone at the days I could sit and play FF I have one of the new ones still in a wrapper.

Hmm... I am not sure. I think maybe it's because my brother only have FFX2.

Like you, I tend to like the story, even though I often feel like I start playing for the mechanics. I'd say that one advantage the early games had was that there were no standards or expectations, so designers were trying all sorts of mechanics combined with hardware controls to fit the mechanics. I'm old enough to remember when pong and asteroids came out, as well as the day we got an Atari 2600. When PCs first started coming up, games were hobbled because they lacked the innovative hardware controls of arcade games. Nowdays games fit into standard genres and tend to have very similar controls. It is rare to see something different, but I'm happy that developers are trying.

Well, yes a good mechanic is also necessary ingredient! There is nothing worse than a game where it is a chore to play!

Ha, I also remember pong and asteroids! Although, that was at friend's places... Somehow, an active imagination made them seem incredibly epic!

I don't know why, but I find console controls incredibly confusing... Whereas the huge array of commands available on the mouse and keyboard combo is not at all confusing...

Unfortunately, the only of these games that I've had any experience with would be an XCOM game, which happened to be a sweet spin-off that I am sure helped to keep interest in the series: "RebelStar: Tactical Command"
A GBA game, not the most stable either, due to being a 3D engine built in a 2D-based system. At (I would guess) 90+% stability, it makes some AAA releases of today look buggy as all get-up! Solid gameplay, too, if a little random due to the nature of the game.
I have similarly experienced all the major ideas put forth, I concur that the medium is (hopefully) getting better at all the hallmarks and even creating new niches` of good story-telling mediums.
The most Heart-wrenching moment in any game I've played, however, would be the double-whammy beginnings of "Tales of Phantasia" in which is a wonderful Action Battle and JRPG system. So I explored the WHOLE first environment, the Hero's hometown, there was all sorts of wonderment. Then the heroes went on a hunt and OOooooofff…
You just don't want to interact with anything for a while after that..
..Then you are later imprisoned, and escape with the help of a mysterious hand, giving you a magic item to aid in eroding the wall.(spoilers hidden) Which then allows you to escape after learning some further.. sniffle..emotionally abrasive facts of the story. I haven't even gotten past the first mass battle yet, but this is a great game that I have to take in small bursts. Since I lost my save however, I'll just have to start from scratch.
But since I GM for Savage Worlds, I don't really play as much videogame RPGs now...(Since my brain has a few, at this point) ..Oh well!

Ha, Rebelstar I just looked up! Looks pretty decent for a GBA game! I'm hoping something XCom like will come out on Switch... At the moment, Darkest Dungeon is the closest... And it is pretty good... But you don't have the same depth of attachment to the characters.

Tales of Phantasia? Is that a series? I think I have some Tales games in my Steam backlog. I've heard good things about the series, but I'm put off by the Jrpg labelling... Typically, I don't get on well with the grinding...

I haven't actually played the walking dead, instead I got to watch pewdiepie's playthrough of the game. And boy oh boy. Did this game really reach for our soft spots like no game had before.

Although I do have something to say about these sort of episodic games. I feel like more than videogames, they're defining a new genre of visual novel or visual series because that's what they are. They're presented in this episodic formats a sort of tv show would air in! The only thing I praise from them is their branching paths and how the story can diverge (although not that much, really...)

But hey, good post! You really mentioned some good games in here!

Thanks for the kind words!

Yes, the stories are only just a little bit different... the main bulk of the story is pretty much the same, but each play through does have just that little bit of personal flavour that means you feel some ownership over the story. That is where the emergent story games shine out (like XCOM or any of the grand strategy games from Paradox)... only a loose main story, but the real stories are in the micro and the personal playing of the game!

XCOM does it amazing. It's a game where the reward is not the destination, instead it's the destination, it's what you've forged and what you've managed to do with all your resources and your comrades. I do get the love for XCOM, It's something you can't get anywhere else o:

Agreed... I have to say, it is almost the embodiment of my perfect game! 90 percent I think...

Ooh o: Do you recommend playing XCOM that much? o: It's always been a little intimidating to me!

Oh yes, XCom2 with long war mod (I haven't tried the latest official expansion)! It will test you, you will lose some but the struggle is worth it! When you get small victories that are hard fought, they are worth so much more!

If you are brave (I'm not!), go with the Ironman mode on!

Hey now i'm inclined to get Xcom if I ever got the chance! I'll be sure to let you know if that happens!

Even though I consider myself a gamer, I have only played one of these 5 games, Life is Strange, and it was great!

There are indeed some moments that can "touch" you, which can only be done with a good story. I was also excited when I tried the prequel "before the storm" but for some reason, I didn't enjoyed it at much, either way, I am looking forward for Life is Strange 2 :).

I highly recommend you this game called "What remains of Edith Finch", it can be finished in one sitting because it lasts between 2-3 hours, but the story of the game was amazing, and the "emotional" moments are those gamers never forget.

Cheers mate.

I didn't realise that there was a sequel coming. I have 'before the storm', but it is sitting on my backlog... I'll eventually get around to it... But I have to finish so many other games! And good ones take time!

I will take a look for Edith Finch, I haven't heard of it, hope it is a PC g game, I have no console!

Yes it is a PC game, it has its fair share of emotional moments while also having a good story, you will like it. But if you try it, make sure to finish it in one sitting.

Cheers mate.

That's for the next long haul trip then! This coming week!

Only played XCom-2 from all the games you've listed, great game! I do want to check out Tales of the Borderlands, I've heard great things about it and I really like Telltale Games.

You will enjoy it, it is a great humorous fast paced romp. Definitely worth it!

Wow, this looks like a really detailed review of those games. Good luck with the contest!

Thanks, although there are heaps of really great entries in the contest!

I gotta pick up the Long War Mod and give Xcom2 another go. Not to mention finally trying Walking Dead, heh.

Long war makes it completely worthwhile! It is such a great mod, even revamping the strategic layer!

I have to play season 1 for walking dead again. I just got season 2 a few years ago, but I didn't keep the save file from 1...but these games are not great replays after you've experienced them already...
