ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY : Antique Church Building - Woodstock, Cape Town

IMG_1588.jpg

I work in the most striking old building every day, and there is not a day that goes by that I am not moved by its age, the cracked old walls and beautiful simplicity. Of course, we have done much restoration and repair to the building, but it's stature and dignity speaks volumes through the imperfections.

This is my entry to @juliank's daily photography challenge.

The shop was actually a school, with an accompanying church. It is in Woodstock, a pretty industrial/design oroientate area. Here is the front view of the old church from the street. You can see the date it was built on the front - "1893"

We have restored the exterior of the church in 2015, it was crumbling and falling apart. You can see the difference in the below images. Funny Story: I actually got married in the church, and my boss decided we needed to redo the exterior two weeks before my wedding. I don't know for sure, as I was too nervous to look, but my colleague told me they were still painting the day before.

It's actually pretty crazy to see the difference!

We installed this antique door sourced from Argentina as the main door, I know the guys had to bash out a whole section of wall to accommodate it. You can actually see the outline in the pic above, from when the team had just taken over the building.

The Alcove

My old boss was a bit of a religious icon fanatic (not that he was religious at all) and so he filled the church with antique relics from all over. A lot of the statues are from Brazil and Argentina, and we even have a few pieces from the black market in Rome.... ssshhh!

I love coming to work every day, and I hope you have enjoyed my little tour.

So much love and kittens

that is such a cool building to work in both inside and out and so much to see thanks for sharing with us

Yeah it is so pretty. Work is not so bad when one is in a place like this.

I never asked - what do you do for a living?

Ohh yes a nice place to work fir sure

As for me I started out in the Telecommunications field as an engineer/technician but now manage our global IT and telecom networks which translates to I attend meetings and shuffle papers

haha! Love it! Cool, always pictured you as a techy sort of guy :)

Yeah I am a hands on and get it done guy still I hate meetings lol

I love styles and architectural details of old houses i takes my breath away l literally can look at it for hours and never bored like i did with you pics it’s really amzing by the way this an old building in egypt it’s about more than hundred years old

I love it! I just love old buildings with character and this one certainly has it.

I love that it's been renovated, and well done. Your photographs certainly do it justice and the story adds so much.

In the 'entrance to the alcove' photo I believe I see a copy of "Hera adjusts her Sandal". I recognize it because the 'big house' we bought (built in 1893 also) had a bias relief of that over the mantle in the Great Room. I'm excited just to see it!

Thanks for a wonderful presentation of a wonderful place. No wonder you like going to work :)

ohhhhhhhhh! I had to google that! yeah, it's a modern copy, pure white marble, from Vietnam :)

Work itself can be, well, work, but being here and doing all the weird and wonderful things we do every day can be super fun.

xxx

Thank you @princessmewmew. Such a beautiful place. And what a difference it makes with the restoration. Again, thank you for the post and giving us a tour of your place of work

It’s a pleasure! I should actually find the photos of what it looked when the guys first bought it. It was almost in pieces!

In Nigeria, there's this ancient city called Badagry. It was actually where the British, that colonized us, built their first church, so it was more of an administrative headquarter. The buildings there are as antique as the word itself. The first storey building in Nigeria, the museum that tells the story of the slave trade...the whole town reeks of archaic architecture.
I hope to go there soon so I could make a post like this one.

ooh! what a lovely comment, thank you. I love history and learning about other countries histories.

Thanks buddy x

😁😁

That marble chimney-piece is amazing and those two stone urns are breathtaking. What a lovely place to be everyday! This is a fun kind of challenge.

yeah, it is! Thanks Donna!

_/|\_Thank you, for the virtual tour, @princessmewmew, of your aesthetic work space and it's nice to learn a little bit about the church where you were married :) May you continue to be surrounded by Beauty & Blessings.

thanks so much! glad you enjoyed :) it is incredibly breathtaking

Lovely images you captured. I had a friend in Egypt who collected antiques and ran a store, but he grew so fond of them & attached, he could not let them go. Taking a peek at your store I thought of his, may he RIP _/|\_
