Concrete forms and exterior passages define this home designed by the American studio Rick Joy Architects, which is located in the Turks and Caicos archipelago.
Designed to offer intimacy and serenity to its owners, the family-friendly holiday home embraces its natural setting, featuring lush native plants and jagged rocks. The eggshell-colored concrete is subtly textured, contrasting turquoise water, in the same way as the white sand that borders the entrance. Extended on the site, Le Cabanon consists of separate concrete volumes separated by passages in the open air. From the hallways, the walls create shallow viewing angles that reveal a glimpse of each space. The private functions are at the front of the house, while the living areas are located at the back, overlooking the water.
The front part of the house consists of a flat roof and the interior spaces are isolated and protected. In the back, a block resembling a pavilion houses an American kitchen, a living room and a dining area. Rectangular in plan, this area is surmounted by an asymmetrical roof dressed in wood shingles. An opening in the roof helps with ventilation and cooling. The pavilion has retractable glass walls that help eliminate the boundary between the inside and the outside. On the north-west side, the room connects to a sheltered patio, a generous deck and a narrow pool.
the way the designer used the different texture of concrete from floor to wall is simple and works well with the site. doesn’t overpower the surroundings due to its simple form.
A cabanon, where I live, is the place in the garden to store tools. This cabanon is amazing, I want one like that :-)
Beautiful use of such simplistic and raw materials!
Hey Mariemm i just subled upon your account and fell in love with this house! i especially like how the architect placed those small squared windows in different spots in the wall. fantastic how they draw lines of light into the room.
The way that the architects use the light is wonderful. Every space is touched by the light from above or from the side. Great!
