I had the urge to use my watercolor pencils to paint a unicorn. I had the intention of selling the painting, but during the sketching, my daughter decided to claim rights to hang it on her wall. I don't have many process pictures, since sketching is hard to capture on a cell phone (my nice camera was on charge, so there's only the last picture that has any real clarity). I worked on it off and on for a few days.
I started off with a regular pencil sketch. I go through the process of using shapes to block out features, but you can't see that from this picture.
In the next picture, I've added color with the watercolor pencils dry. Then adding water to it, I build on top of that using watercolor pencil on wet paper, and using the brushes to pick pigment off of the pencil itself.
Finally, I finish it by adding a multi-colored background with purples, blues and pinks. Then I flick some watercolor to create spots with the same colors, and a watered-down white acrylic to add the spots of white.
Thanks for looking!
