The type of art I generally like doing is surreal some might even say dark, but I never really get commissioned for that. I most often get commissioned for portraits, especially dog portraits. I have noticed a common denominator, and that is that most people would rather pay me to paint their dog than their spouse..........and I'm pretty sure that says all you need to know about marriage.
Since I started pursuing my art as a career there has been a running joke that I am going to end up being known as the guy that paints dogs. The first commission that got me started back in the professional art world was in fact a dog. This dog. So here are just a few of the dogs I have painted in the last year or so.
36" x 36"ish Spray Paint on Wood
12" x 24" ish Spray Paint on Wood
24" x 30" Spray Paint on Canvas
These first 3 dogs were done using a technique I have been working on for a little over a year and am ready to get back to work on. I don't have the studio space to spray paint indoors currently. I am waiting on that warm weather to come back so I can get back outside and play. I already have a few commissions lined up for this type of work once I can get outside and make it happen.
OH, Spring and Summer where hath thou gone? Hiding behind the blustery winds and frigid heart of Old Bitch Winter no doubt. Come back to me my loves.
8" x 10" Oil on CanvasBoard
9" x 12" Charcoal on Tan Paper
I hope you enjoyed the dog gallery or should I say kennel?....... Joking aside I will gladly paint your dogs. Who wants to be the first person to commission me for a dog portrait with Steem?
dog art wouldn't normally attract me to a post, but I really like that top piece. It reminds me of a piece my friend had commisioned of his dog, then he pretended he'd found the painting somewhere in a flea market! He was too embarrassed to admit he'd had it done. Everyone loves their dogs and that's why it sells. Probably a cheaper market than the horse art scene though.
Yeah I wouldn't mind a comission from one of those million dollar horse owners.
Your dog works are really awesome! Unique texture, dog backwards is god, so dog/god is throwing you a bone! Keep up the good work, I look forward to more of your technique!
One of my pieces
Thank you. That is an awesome cat.
Damn, i love your spray painting technique! do you make a lot of stencils when prepping for a painting?
As for the subject, well... no unconditional love is as unconditional as love between an owner and a pet. And you captures that love in the dogs' eyes perfectly.
Thank you. Yes, I make a lot of stencils. I have got a large portfolio binder full of them. I'm always thinning them out to make more room for better stencils. This is also why I have huge stacks of cardboard in my closet. I have been saving cereal boxes, neighbors beer and soda boxes, and pretty much anything with thin cardboard.
I plan on growing my collection of celebrity stencils to set up at a festival somewhere and make portraits live. So far I only have John Wayne, Chuck Norris, MLK, Einstein, Tesla, Marilyn Monroe, Steven Tyler, Blues Brothers, and a few others. They were all just left over from commissions or goofing off.
My biggest problem has been trying to set up a more portable kit for spray painting. As it is now i am lugging around like 3 big ole bags, and that is without carrying what I am painting on. I'm probably going to go buy a little wagon. lol I could just roll around and if people ask me what I am doing I could say, "I'm wagon taggin'"
Thank you for your kind words and the re-steem as well.
oh yeah, carrying all these cans, you might have to downsize to basic colors for portability... or build a custom container on wheels... i've done a fair share of body painting for events, and i used airbrush with a couple dozen stencils. but to transfer everything i used large tool boxes on wheels from home depot
I have tried downsizing, but have a hard time bringing less than 12 colors since I usually don't know what I am going to want to do once I get on location.
If I was more tech savvy I would program a motorized wagon to follow me around with my supplies. Lol
Until then I will have to look into some of these boxes on wheels.
this one looks pretty sturdy. Mine is a bit smaller but fits a lot
Schweet, Schweet stuff. Have you ever thought of painting a dog melting or on fire.....you know blend you destiny and your dream?
~Cheers
I like the way you think!! Sketches for this project are now on the list of things to do. There is potential for a series here. Thank you
I absolutely love your spray paint pet portraits!! such a sick style. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. And Welcome to the Steemit Family.
Oh my god, dogs are so much better than cats. These are cool.
Thanks. That is a good point you make. Nobody has ever commissioned me to paint their cat
Dog portraiture is a unique genre! They have lots of personality.
