Veel kunstenaars staan helemaal niet stil bij de vorm van hun canvas. Ik ben van het type dat daarover nadenkt. Niet vanuit een puur filosofisch oogpunt, maar omdat de vorm van het canvas een grote rol speelt in je kunstwerk. Een verkeerde vorm canvas leidt ertoe dat een kunstwerk slecht tot zijn recht komt.
Waarom is de vorm van het canvas relevant?
De rand van een schilderij of foto is een onvermijdelijk onderdeel van de compositie van het werk. Of er nu een dikke, een smalle of helemaal geen lijst omheen zit, de vorm speelt mee in het totale beeld. Bij de rand houdt op wat de kunstenaar gemaakt heeft en begint de omgeving - in veel gevallen de muur.
Het effect van de overgang tussen kunstwerk en omgeving laat zicht het beste illustreren met een voorbeeld.
Een rechthoekig kader is niet per definitie verkeerd. Wat is beweer is dat een rechthoek lang niet altijd past bij ieder onderwerp. En dat betekent dat je er als kunstenaar dus rekening mee zou moeten houden of er in ieder geval bewust mee om moet gaan.
Hoe kun je zelf de vorm van je canvas bepalen?
Zelf de vorm van je canvas bepalen is helemaal nog niet zo eenvoudig. Als je niet digitaal werkt, dan kom je al gauw terecht bij winkels voor kunstbenodigdheden. En deze bieden een breed assortiment van alleen rechthoekige canvassen. Ok, misschien een enkele ronde of ovale. Maar bijvoorbeeld een driehoek, een willekeurige veelhoek over andere vorm??
Maar ook digitaal zit je standaard vast aan een rechthoekige vorm. Een ronde JPG bestaat uberhaupt niet... De enige oplossing is werken met transparantie; zo kun je iedere vorm creeeren, al zal je die altijd moeten inpassen binnen een rechthoekig kader...
Hiermee is het probleem van de rechthoekigheid nog niet opgelost helaas. Voor de weergave van je werk zul je toch weer moeten werken met.... een rechthoekig scherm...!
Enkele voorbeelden
Veel van mijn werk is bedoeld voor weergave "zonder (rechthoekige) rand". Hieronder enkele voorbeelden uit mij serie Leidse Lijnen en werken die in mijn galerie op MakersPlace.com staan.

Er is altijd hoop: ik geef hier een link naar een printer, waarmee je rechtstreeks op muren kunt printen: WallPen. Het werkt IN IEDERE GEWENSTE VORM; ik wil geen reclame maken (ik heb hem nooit zelf gebruikt), maar ik zou er wel mee aan de slag willen!!
Mooi, maar uiteindelijk zal een VR-bril de enige oplossing zijn om je echt van het rechthoekig kader te verlossen.

Many artists do not consider the shape of their canvas at all. I'm the type that thinks about that. Not from a purely philosophical point of view, but because the shape of the canvas plays a major role in your artwork. A wrongly shaped canvas means that a work of art does not come into its own.
Why is the shape of the canvas relevant?
The edge of a painting or photograph is an inevitable part of the composition of the work. Whether it is surrounded by a thick, narrow or no frame at all, the shape plays a role in the overall picture. At the edge of the canvas, what the artist has created ends and the environment begins - in many cases the wall.
The effect of the transition between artwork and environment is best illustrated with an example.

A rectangular frame is not necessarily wrong. What is claimed is that a rectangle does not always fit every subject. And that means that as an artist you should take it into account or at least deal with it consciously.
How can you determine the shape of your canvas yourself?
Determining the shape of your canvas yourself is not that easy. If you don't work digitally, you will soon end up at art supply stores. And these offer a wide range ... of just rectangular canvases. Barring a round or oval exception. But for example a triangle, an arbitrary polygon over another shape??
Digitally you are also stuck to a rectangular shape as standard. A round JPG does not exist at all... The only solution is to work with transparency; this way you can create any shape, although you will always have to fit it within a rectangular frame...
This does not solve the problem of rectangularity unfortunately. For the display of your work you will have to work with.... a rectangular screen...!

There's always hope: I'll give you a link here to a printer that allows you to print directly onto walls: WallPen. It works IN ANY FORM YOU WANT; I don't want to advertise (I've never used it myself), but I would like to get started with it!!
Nice, but in the end VR glasses will be the only solution to really get rid of the rectangular frame.
