Something I learned recently with PS is you can fill a black layer above your brown base and go to Filter>Render>Fibers. Makes a great wooden grain that comes out seamlessly on the sides.

Yea, that's similar to what I did here. I used the fibers filter, but I colored it with a gradient map adjustment layer. One of the pluses with a gradient map is that you can color with as many colors as you want so you can get whatever color variation you need all in that one adjustment layer. The textures you're making are looking nice! :)
