The Panama Canal is one of the most impressive architectural works in the world, and I have to have a lot of ingenuity and work to create this very impressive work.
History
The history of the Panama Canal goes back to the first European explorers in America, since the thin strip of land, the Isthmus of Panama, is an ideal place to create a passage for maritime transport between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans.
Towards the end of the 19th century, technological advances and commercial pressures were such that the construction of a canal became a viable proposition. A first attempt on the part of France failed, but it was possible to make a first excavation that later USA used, giving rise to the current Panama Canal in 1914.
The canal is in operation in Panamanian hands, by the Treaty "Torrijos - Carter" on September 7, 1977 by the President of the United States Jimmy Carter and General Omar Torrijos Herrera, which entered into force on December 31, 1999; and work is underway to extend it as of September 3, 2007.
During the construction of the Canal, more than 183 million cubic meters of material originally excavated were removed that, if put on a platform train, would go around the world four times.
From the technical point of view, the Panama Canal is one of the greatest achievements of modern engineering. From the Atlantic to the Pacific it measures 80 kilometers long; it has a depth of 12.8 meters in the Atlantic and of 13.7 meters in the Pacific; the width is from 91 to 300 meters. It has two terminal ports, one in each ocean; three sets of twin locks, Miraflores, Gatún and Pedro Miguel, and one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, the Gatún, which covers 425 square kilometers and was formed by a land dam built across the Chagres River.
I like your post. Very informative. Nowadays it takes about 6 hours to do the crossing tour. It's a bit expensive as a tourist, but it is definitely worth. Panama's economy relies on banking, tourism and the Canal, off course.
