In February when I fell off the social media wagon again, I immersed myself in a project with a local studio/gallery to create a space to work on a new, large commission. My one bedroom apartment that I had been working from the previous year was just not going to cut it for the size of the painting coming into queue. I introduce to you my new work space! It has already changed five times over since then because I always have different projects coming through. Evolution pictures at the end :)
This is my apartment several months earlier as I created a solo exhibition for a gallery. As you can see, it was a tight fit!
I even covered my bed with plastic to paint the edges on some of the larger pieces of the collection. I made it work!
Once I received word that a 3'x4'+ commission was in the works, I started asking around about a spot to work. A local gallery owner and artist suggested ideaXfactory run by amazing artists Pam and Russ RuBert. I reached out and sure enough they were willing to help me out!
This was the spot we decided on! Amidst all of this, the timing was perfect. They had just started planning an Open Studios exhibition with a number of local artists, so I got to be a part of it!
There were already a couple artists set up in the back, but the front of the building was mostly open floor space with standing posts. To accommodate more artists we decided to build some walls to create little cubicles for workspace. As you can tell, I was a little excited!
You can see me chatting away in the back left. The event was a huge success with so many people coming through and plenty of inspiring and thoughtful conversations. Gave my heart the warm fuzzies.
Sometimes I like to play videographer, so throughout the event I snuck around and recorded some clips of the space, art, and artists!
And since then, like I said, it's evolved so much to accommodate my current projects. Here are some photos of my space over the last couple months. I'll be staying here a while I work on this commission (I'll share about that soon too!) and in the meantime I'll also be sharing all the cool things that are happening at ideaXfactory! Right now they're hosting Sculpture X Games in honor of International Sculpture Day and a "We Could Be Heroes" exhibition in the gallery we built!
