Hello Steemians,
Happy new year to everyone. I believe everyperson on earth no matter where they live are in the new year now.I wish this year brings a lot of happiness and joy to everyone.
Over the past couple of months I have been exposed to massive amount of knowledge on everything data science which is quite intersting since I am barely half way into my program :)
One such area that I have been drawn to is the area of Data Visualization, a lot of studies and research have been embarked on to determine how best to visually represent a dataset to pass across the message. I have been taught every visualization should start with a user story detailing a scenario, a problem and the user.
After a couple of lectures learning about different visualizations and utilizing several tools, our lecturer showed us this video :
Please watch if you have the time. It is about two women Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posevic, they are both information designers and the founders of 'Dear Data'.In September 2014,they started exchanging post cards every week with hand drawn visualizations of personal data they gathered on a particular topic.
Find scans some of the post cards they exchanged below:
At a time where Artificial Intelligence is disrupting all industries, the Dear Data story is like a breath of fresh air and a timely reminder that the 'human effect' is still very powerful. They have recieved wide spread admiration and appreciation from the entire data visualization community, they also released a book containing all the designs. To cap it all, all the original postcards exchanged by the pair were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art(MOMA) as part of their permanent collection.
I have never fancied myself to draw anything nice with a pen hehe but as part of the excercise for this class, we all had to take inspiration from Girogia and Stefanie and draw a visualization from personal data on any topic. When I showed this to a classmate, she said it looked more like a CIA coded message hehe. See if you can interpret it.
Of course I wont keep you in suspense and not tell you how to interpret it. Only you have to figure out a way to rotate this image and read my ugly handwriting hehe.
