[Early Years] "Lamp & Wedge" (6x6 mini oil on panel) painting process

in #art7 years ago

Greetings Steemians,
In addition to recent works, I'll also be posting paintings from the early years of my painting career.

This miniature was from 2011, but it feels like an eternity ago. The one thing that has remained relatively consistent over the years is my desire to have a strong singular focus in the composition.

Here is the beginning stage. An umber block in to show shapes of shadows:

I start in on the wedge with a direct painting approach (alla prima style, wet-into-wet):

Next stage. My strategy is to bring more drama and focus to the watermelon by pushing the greens in the background and the lamp:

Next stage. Getting my "glow" on:

And the finished still life mini painting, "Lamp & Wedge" (6x6 oil on panel, 2011):

Beautiful work! I'll follow you :) I like the glow around the slice. Brilliant job!

Incredible! I wonder though how you came up with the idea of putting a mellon wedge next to a lamp?

Purely visual/color based motivation as far as I can remember, although incongruity can have interesting narrative possibilities. I like for people to wonder... 😁

Hi David, I just got on Steemit today! Love all your work....wish I could paint half as good as you. Keep up the good work!

Thank you and good to see you here!! 😁

David, very professional quality in this painting. You have a great classic realistic style--where you use just the right colors and values to capture the subject without a lot of fuss. It reminds me of Sargent or Eakins work in style (not necessarily subject matter) Upvoted and following!

Thank you very much I appreciate it! I was taught with classical techniques so you must be picking up on that!

Hey David!! Always great seeing your early work :D

Thank you Nick!

Good post thank you :) I followed you follow me

How long did it take you to paint this piece? I wish I was better at oils. Nice work.

Thank you! It was a while back so I don't remember. But likely over the course of 2 days.

Beautiful work! 😍🙏 I love all the different values of green and red playing off each other!

Thank you! :)
