Pen & Ink of Beacon Hill Shop

Here is a drawing/painting I did of a cute little shop in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It is a mix of pen and ink drawing, and a diluted ink wash I brushed on with a watercolor brush.

This is one of the oldest and most picturesque of the Boston neighborhoods. There is an odd mix of meticulously maintained historical mansions next to run down tenements. I love the flavor of the old, with hints of antique opulence mingling with the verdigris patina of neglect. I enjoy capturing images of the faded glory, the weathering of decades, and the off-kilter alignment of windows and rooflines.

Since taking these shots, the shop has been renovated. It's nowhere near as interesting. I feel pressure to capture these sorts of things before they're all gone!

Looks good! Thanks!

Awesome work. Do you know what shop this was, and what it became?

I love Beacon Hill. It's one of America's greatest walking neighborhoods. (A shame the rents start at $2200 for a studio!)

I’m not sure but I can find out.

Funny - I'd assumed this was on Charles! That's really tucked into the neighborhood.

Yep, closer to the state house. There’s a great plumbing shop there too that I want to paint.

Hah - I've never heard of someone getting excited about a plumbing shop. But I think I know the one you're talking about. On Myrtle Street? The wife and I came very close to renting an available storefront down the street from there to turn into a second location of the flower shop we owned at the time.

Yes, that one! There’s a dog that sleeps out front. And the window displays are poetry.

Wow... This is really good..Keep up!!!

Thank you- It's so challenging working with ink!

It may be, but you really do a great work!
