Hi Steemians,
Some of you already know this, but I love to sketch on vacation. I typically spend an 30 minutes to an hour per day doing a sketch or multiple quick sketches. It helps me absorb the place and see the little details that make it much more memorable. And then I come away with a little memory recorded on paper. This particular sketch was done over the summer in Newport, Rhode Island. It's a nice little town with a lot of history, great architecture, good seafood and very sketch-able places.
I went down to the wharf at 9am on a Saturday, just before tourists started to show up. I walked around for 5 or 10 minutes until I found the view that I wanted to sketch. I was out on the pier looking back towards the town, sitting right next to a sailboat. I sat right on this bench by the water.
Slowly, people started to emerge and begin the day. There were only workers at first, people getting ready to take visitors out on their boats and waiters setting up tables for the brunch crowd. This was the scene for the first half of my sketching time. It was very peaceful and intimate and quiet. I met a few locals who stopped by to see the drawing for a few minutes, chat and then carry on. A few came back 30 minutes later to see the progress. They were very friendly and made the experience even more enjoyable.
I don't usually do this, but on this particular day I felt like documenting the sketch over time.
After a while, the tourists started to show up and block parts of my view. Sometimes it bothers me, but this time it didn't. For the most part the tourists were also friendly and liked to see the sketch. It can be a little intimidating though when a small group starts watching. The biggest challenge for this particular drawing wasn't the tourists, not even close! It was the fact that this bustling little historic town comes to life. The umbrellas come out to block the sun blazing on the brunch tables, the boats leave and come in, the sails are untied, the restaurant windows are opened and many other little things. I have to adjust for this as my drawing progresses. In many ways, this drawing is also a look into one hour of time in this particular location where the center of the image is from 9am and the outer edges are from 10am. A lot changes in that time.
I hope you enjoy the progress images of this drawing. Each and every drawing is very personal and special to me. Let me know if you have any questions about the drawing process or anything else.
Ciao for now, Steemians.

Your beautiful sketches. God bless you.
Thank you
it is amazing how to capture each and every detail
I don't know if I'd say every detail, but thanks! I try
pretty smooth artwork :) keep it amazing as this one :)
Thanks! Will def try
Woah these are really good shots of the process. Also, that sketchbook looks HUGE.
Yeah, it's pretty big. It's 22" x 15".
Such a beautiful sketch! The detail and perspective are drawn so well! As someone who really struggles with the patience to draw scenery with such accuracy, I can say I admire your work for the skill and patience required to create it :)
Thanks! I definitely don’t feel patient when I’m sketching. Which is why I usually draw with pen and draw as quickly as possible after setting up some initial perspective lines. Definitely takes some practice to figure out what works and what you like though.
Wow! So cool!
Thanks!
Wow very detail. I love it
I love it :) Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic and very interesting post greetings

Thank you! It has taken some practice
You are welcome.
Gerçekten çok güzel. Ellerinize sağlık ;)
I hope this means "you are the coolest person in the entire world" !! Thanks
Nice work documenting it, that's different, most people would not think about doing that. Maybe they should have a modified time-lapse go-pro for artist :)
up-voted and following you now
Thanks! I've actually used a gopro to do exactly that in the past and then used video editing to speed up the video. you definitely need a tripod though
That's fantastic! :D Thanks for sharing. Nice to see the process too. Followed you.
Thank you! Glad you liked it. Appreciate the follow also!
Que hermoso e inspirador, hermoso arte, felicidades.
Gracias!
