Good day dear Hive Community, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my contribution and hope you had a pleasant start to the weekend! Today I would like to bring a mineral a little closer and hope you can learn something new.
Here you can see a specimen of the mineral Riebeckite which is also a rather rarer mineral which can also be counted to the mineral class of silicates. As often, Riebeckite also became known after the explorer and was discovered for the first time in Yemen and the discoverer is the German chemist and mineralogist Emil Riebeck (1853 - 1885) and a few years after his death the mineralogist Adolf Sauer (1852 - 1932) decided to name this mineral in his honor. Riebeckite can be produced in different ways and it can often be found together with magmatic rocks or is created by oxidation and as a rather rare mineral it has only been documented in a few hundred locations worldwide and among the most important are Africa, Austria, USA, Switzerland or Pakistan. The color varies from black to dark blue and the crystals have a glass-like surface and in the past it was also used for the production of asbestos fibers which are no longer used and have been replaced due to the health risks and otherwise there are no economically relevant areas of application and it is particularly popular in collectors circles.
Thank you very much for stopping by and I hope you could learn something new about minerals! I captured these pictures with my Camera Sony Alpha 6000 plus 55-210 mm lens!
