Auguste Bartholdi, who also went by Frédéric to those close to him, is known for sculpting the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island (not Ellis Island). He has apparently traveled forward through time to send us all a message through the use of Google Maps.
This is his profile, he's a Level 7 Local Guide. He has only one review, as you can see, and 5 stars at that! Pretty comical when you look at who it's from. 😏
The only pictures on his account are of the two empty pedestals in New York and Paris. It's kind of sad actually.
Many of these blue dots on street view are the panoramic images he took that day and she appears in none of them. I urge you to go and see for yourself, it's quite impressive.
So what is this time-traveling artist trying to tell us?
Could it be that his vision of liberty enlightening the world was not achieved through his eyes? Why is it that in September of 2016, the sculptor of one of the most famous statues in the world was unable to see her or capture her image with his camera and felt the need to quietly send us this message via Google Maps? Including the smaller version located in Paris?
Yes, the pedestal across the pond is empty too...
Is Liberty lost or was she never really there in the first place?
What impression is the artist trying to convey to those of us who can see what is unseen?
As works of Art go, I have to say this addition to the Liberty story is my favourite piece. Thank you Freddie. 💘
