I tried bots three times, barely broke even. I tried "whaleshares" once and would have made more by just selling the whaleshares than I made on the post BUT I timed that terrible. I bought my whaleshare vote and the next day steem took that epic dive. By the time the post paid out, I earned less on it than the whaleshares were worth on openledger.
It gets discouraging, I see people making TONS more than I do on every post, and sometimes it is OBVIOUS they spent very little time on it, but I try to compare my steemit to my facebook, and that helps.

I do seem to keep getting about 50/50 for and against. So, I think I'll just do it sometimes and think, I'm spending this money the way you would spend on advertising or supplies for your own business and if it gives something back good if not, it's just part of the game. Having been a business owner/independent worker for so long, spending and sometimes losing is just part of the game and really just part of life. It's all a learning experience anyway.
