you don't have to, you just have to be patient and keep on doing stuff in the software of your choice, progressively from the most very basic things to complex (Although I thing if you want to give the same painting feel you just have to learn the brushes and how opacity works).

I think with a little affort your skills can be translated to digital art too. just a thought. :)
