Years ago I was with two friends hiking in the Totes Gebirge (Death Mountains) plateau in Austria. The weather was shitty so instead of keeping walking higher up we started to balance stones. I took many photos from our creations and one of them ended up as my reference for this painting.

Here are some shots from our stone balancing performance:
Here is the progress of the painting:

I've never seen this painting before. In one of the valley's near Oberstdorf, there's a spot where the river bank is full of balancing rock sculptures; hundreds of them.
The plateau of Totes Gebirge certainly is a landscape you'd love to see. Want to join me on a drone-hike there next spring?
I'm up for that! =) I started looking up the region after reading your post. I have seen little of Austria thus far.
That is really cool to see the inspiration behind the end product! The stone stacking is always a cool art too, I do it when I am in some really remote place so that if anyone passes by in the future they know they are not the first person there. Also, some of those stones look really heavy. Did you use the camera angles to make the stones look heavier than they are, or did you guys lift all of those stones?
A few of the stones were heavy indeed so we only were able to get them in position all together. And of course I tried to shoot it in angles where it appeared bigger than it actually was! However, we didn't move this big base stone - it was around a meter in diameter:
You should totally have lied about it! "Sonic Levitation" and everything....
He's lying about not lying. If he admitted to using sonic levitation, the secret government forces would be after him.
Evokes the same feel as some of the stills from "Arrival". However in this case you predated that movie by a considerable margin.
Like the photos, especially the balanced stones in the foggy atmosphere.
Thanks @talltim!
A very beautiful painting. The UFO gives it a haunting atmosphere.
I really like your artworks.
Thanks!
