A piece of art that is made from the solid material like clay, stone, wood, plastic, metal, etc by carving or molding is called sculpture.many carved artifacts have been found in the Terai region of the country, providing an insight into the religion of the country of early times.. As with painting, nearly all-Nepalese sculptures are of a religious character.

Nepalese Sculpture was primarily started by Newars, one of the nepalese ethnics groups.Sculpting metal statue is a lengthy procedure that requires great skill. A large piece of metal sculpture can take up to six months to create and several people need to work on it. Crafting the work by hand is sometimes exhausting. The secrets of sculpturing work were kept restricted to a few families. Knowledge of the skill was passed down generation to generation and was guarded from those outside the family circle.
The Lichhavi Period is considered to be the beginning of sculptures in Nepal. A distinguishing feature of Lichchhavi sculptures is their simplicity. The use of clothes and ornaments was quite restrained, many Hindu deities. Lichchhavi period sculptures most often used basalt for their work, first chiseling and then smoothing and varnishing, perhaps with iron dust. The limbs of Lichchhavi period idols were so beautifully executed that it is not possible to find one specimen with a chisel mark. The statue of Tribikram, the oldest so far in Nepal is believed to be carved during the reign of Lichhavi King Mandev. Statues of Yaksha and Birupakshya are also among the oldest, but there are no evidence when they were built. Statues at Changunarayan Temple (Changu), Palanchowk Bhagawati (Kavre), Narayan (Narayanasthan, Budanilkantha) and numerous stone spouts, dhungedhara in the Kathmandu Valley are also believed to be the sculpture of Lichhavi Period.
