These ceramic leaves were enameled and burned at high temperature. The mineral oxides that make up the enamel, when they are fused, sometimes cease to be oxide and it is only mineral again.
This phenomenon is called reduction and can be induced by throwing the part still with the enamel melted in sawdust, so the fire consumes the oxygen molecule of the mineral, leaving a metallic effect.
