RE: Taking Flight

Oooooh I like that idea. I've just started experimenting with my first floater frames. I like the way they look.

How would I do the floater frame with three paintings? I haven't seen that done. They all go in the same frame? Would it be special custom frame for the three pieces, with three areas to support each canvas? I'm very interested in any ideas you can share! (Framing is an art form in and of itself, one that I am just starting to scratch the surface of!)

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, the floater frame will have a lip in the back with holes. Getting the canvas centered was tricky. I'd cut scraps of wood as spacers and put them between the canvas and the frame. I'd have screws pushed through just a little so that when I pushed the canvas against them, the points would mark the back of the canvas. If the marks didn't show up I'd put a little chalk on them. Then I'd take the canvas out and drill holes to match the holes in the frame.

Come to think of it, it might be tricky with the three paintings. You'd almost need a floater frame with a solid back, or else you'd see straight through between the paintings. You might need to cut a hard backing board like 1/8" mdf, paint it to match the frame, and mount that in the frame first. Then you could drill through to the back of your canvas stretchers. A bit of work but I bet it would look stunning.

Very cool. I will have to see if I can make that work or see if I can find something that I can modify. Thank you!!
