When you live as close to the beach as I do, you see a great number of bodies splashing in the waves, walking along the beach, tanning, and showing their assets to those who dare to peek.
I'm currently working on a series called 'beach bums'. It is a series of bottoms, at the beach, and nothing more. I will be using mixed media, paper, ink, and watercolour to create the works. This is my first artwork '1 beach bum' To see the step by step process please keep reading.
First things first, the design. I quickly draw a rough sketch of a girl on the beach facing the waves.
Now let the glueing begin. I search for and rip skin coloured paper from a stash of forgotten magazines - food photos of delicious pastries make the skin look lovely and golden.
And let me just say, who doesn't love a red poke a dot bikini bottom?
I search several magazines for different shades of blue. Glueing darker blue pieces closest to the horizon.A shadow and white wash are then added. I decided to use watercolour for the sky and sand, I think it helps to create texture and depth to the artwork..I continue to work on the white wash with more paper / glue / paper. And choose two different coloured greens for the hill in the background.
Something was missing 🤔
Of course seagulls!!
I paint some seagulls using watercolors. Then add detail with ink. Once happy with my little guys, I cut them out and stick them on tight. So there you have it, the first in the beach bum series.
