Pushing the Boundaries of the Canvas
3D paintings create an interactive opportunity to engage with art, as the perspective changes when the viewer shifts their orientation to the painting..it is impossible to replace that kind of experience with photographs, but here's a look at the side view:
"Keepers of the Colors" by David Heskin
Custom canvas and frame was built by the artist
Looking at your frames, I'm assuming you have a very well equipped workshop.
Just a few basic tools and a lot of visualizing, plus trial and error...
I recently saw the first precedent for 3d canvases in the Tate Britain. It was from the 1960's and I could see that the artist was grappling with the same set of parameters that I had come up against..
There is a certain impracticality to 3d paintings, regarding their display, transport and restoration, however.
I see why more people have not gone this route..
I am excited, as an artist myself, to move into VR and 3d virtual painting. It is an amazing time to be an artist. Love your work.
First precedent for 3D paintings, 1960's? Is not the curved vaulted ceilings of chapels and churches 3D? Or even beyond to much older surfaces.
First precedent for specifically 3D canvas paintings that I have seen was this piece in the Tate
Thanks for the resteem, Leo!
This is so cool! Maybe a gif or a video would help give a better sense of it in 3d? I would love to see this in person- it feels like the kind of thing that you could look at for hours and see something different every time.
I'll work on getting some videos posted..
Well done
Oh interesting! I haven't seen something quite like this before. No kidding, who says a canvas needs to be rectangular and flat...? Glad I stumbled in! Following for more!
Thank you! I aim to inspire!
amazing!
Love your works and the dimensions for your 3d! Wish you could share your process on how you make the canvas itself
We'll get there! One secret at a time!
haha good one, looking forward for more of you art work, i like those kind of art, its like living in the 5th dimension, with a touch of psychedelic feel
