Is it possible to do a painting on a piece of wood? There are some who don't think so.
Here is an acrylic painting I did of a client's old farmhouse, which is now gone, painted on wood harvested near the house. This is approximately 18" wide, and I painted everything in sepia tones to match the wood--walnut, if I remember correctly.
She had asked other artists if they would be willing to do something like this, painting on a piece of wood, but they didn't think it was possible.
"Could you do it?" she asked me.
"Definitely," I assured her. It's just a matter of properly priming the wood beforehand.
Here is the final painting:
In this detail photo, you can see the front of the house...
Here is a detail photo, showing the back side of the house with the old fashioned windmill. You can see the texture of the wood showing through here. I painted the edges of the picture to blend into the woodgrain, and tinted my gesso (primer) to match the color of the wood, so there would be a natural transition.
All in all this was an interesting piece to work on--way different than anything I've done in this past. I thought this was a beautiful way to keep the memories alive!
Nice work @mattphilleo
.. Awesome work always.
The pallette you used gives a feeling of watercolor on the wood. It's a great look which would probably not work with actual watercolors since you would need paper to absorb the watercolor. Well done!
Thanks, Otage. I used acrylic with the glazing technique, so it does get thinned out quite a bit. They may explain why it looks like watercolor. Great observation. Upvoted your comment.
I really like the your glazing technique gives a great feel to your art.
beautifully done, great work. I've done a few acrylic paintings on wood (in different forms), do you have concerns of the paint flaking? or did you seal yours?
There shouldn't be any problems with acrylic paint flaking if it's going to be displayed indoors and it's high quality acrylic paint. I use NovaColor paint manufactured and sold out from Culver City, CA. Their paint is as good as Liquitex, Golden, or Windsor & Newton, but at about 1/3 of the price! But yes, I do normally seal my paintings with a clear satin varnish. I didn't do that with this one, because I wanted the wood to look raw and not shiny. I think I just used a flat finish matte medium over the whole painting and then faded it off to the edges. In other words, I didn't apply any paint or medium to the raw wood at all, but just let it look natural.
I'm a Master Finisher of 30 + years , you are doing it fine if you want to do it better for sealing the would . Use Sherwin Williams Water White Conversion Varnish w/ the acid catalyst. This product is made for high end high use furniture and cabinetry . 2 coat's and you can put anything on it and top coat with anything you want . You cannot put it on anything but it's self.
This painting has a very unique ingenuity. I think it's legendary. I've never seen a painting done on stump of wood before.
Nice post there. Followed ya
Thanks, Samminator! Upvoted your reply. This was a unique painting for me too. Never tried something like this before. I have one other one that I did that's like this, and I will post that soon too. It was done for the same customer. She couldn't have just one, I guess! :)
I can't wait to see it Mattphilleo. You've really piqued my interest
Very nice, Will be looking forward to your posts. Up-voted: hope you will visit my blog
Thank you, Stoneheart for the kind words and upvote. I'll be sharing more and I will check out your posts too. Be blessed.
Awesome Matt...Upvoted ...but how did you made that......
I'll see if I can find some in progress pics of this and include them in another post.
@mattphilleo very nice painting
Thank you!
Is this youe first piece on wood ?
This is actually my second. The first one was like it, and the customer asked me to do another. I posted this one first, because the pictures were all set and ready to go. But I'm going to post the other one too, which would be the first one I did for this customer. Hopefully I can find the in progress pics as well.
That's awesome Matt!
Thanks, as always, Groundcontrol!
this is a very nice painting and it very unique
Thank you!
OMG, this painting is so nice. I have my friends can draw but not in wood. But your talent is so cool and entertain. 😍
Thank you so much, Liarabells. God has been good to me, and gave me the talent. I'm blessed to be able to paint for a living now!
interesting
Oh my god this is so great can we buy those paintings? if yes where can you buy them and how much does it cost ? Its a great piece of art
Thank you, Timsky for the kind words. God's been good to me, to give me the talent and a wife who has encouraged me to not give up over the years in doing art full time, even when it was rough. Yes, you can buy a painting like this. I did this one custom. So, if you have an idea of what you want painted, contact me: [email protected] and I can do it for you on commission.
Quite a creative approach! The colors you chose look very natural.
Thanks! I tried to make them match the wood and blend right in. I used raw umber dark, raw sienna, and a little burnt umber. Those colors really look great on this particular kind of wood.
Hello @mattphilleo your painting is beautiful :)
I did one on wood as well, just very simple but I enjoyed doing it :)
Thanks for showing us your art !
Nice! I like how you painted the outside of the frame to match the flowers. I'll check out more of your work.
I love this!
I appreciate that, Donna!
nice piece of art
Thank you, Gunsmasterrock!
very cool! If there is will there is no limits :)
Indeed. Thanks, Vinyl. I think there's always a way to do something if you look hard enough and have a "can do" attitude.
You are very talented. It is a wonderful keepsake for this family. Beautiful.
Thank you, wrladyhawk. Yes, it's definitely unique and it was a unique idea for sure. I may have to do more like this.
I have seems some fantasitc paintings on wood. It is very unique and very interesting. These are fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you.
Very cool... I want buy it :)
Thank you, Foxkoit. I do take commissions--and I do custom painting. I have for over 20 years part time, and three years full time. This particular painting is of that client's farmhouse, but how much cooler would it be to have your own house--or anything meaningful to you in a painting like this?
What can I say? That's just awesome, your painting on wood. I bought a piece of painting that was done on a banana leaf in Thailand.
Now that's pretty unique!
I like it
Thanks.
I know absolutely nothing about this stuff, but wow! that is some really nice work! Thanks for sharing....
Thank you!
Nice work! @mattphilleo. I do a different kind of woodworking myself. Glad to find someone else with the same interest as I do. https://steemit.com/life/@willshu2049/carpentry-rediscover-manhood-1
