Continuing the stroll through St. Petersburg, we will return to the most important and lively street of the city - Nevsky Prospekt. There, not far from the Kazan Cathedral on the opposite side, we see the Lutheran Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The church is active. Regular services are held in German and Russian.

In 1727, Tsar Peter II (grandson of Peter the Great) gave the German Lutheran community a plot of land in the center of St. Petersburg on the Nevsky Prospect (the so-called Nevsky Prospekt earlier). And already on June 29, 1728, on the day of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, the building of the church was laid on this place. In two years on June 25, 1730 the church was built and consecrated. The building was built of brick, had a wooden tower and accommodated up to 1500 people. Near the church were built two houses in which were housed the apartments of church ministers and there was a school.
In 1740, wooden buildings were demolished and in their place according to the project of architect Kempf in 1747 stone buildings were built. in 1762 on the site was built a two-story Lutheran school, which was rebuilt afterwards, but survived to the present day.
In 1832, the church building became dilapidated and a competition was announced for the construction of a new church building. The competition was won by the project of the artist and architect Alexander Bryullov (the brother of the famous Russian artist Karl Bryullov). The building of the old church was demolished in 1833 and immediately the construction of a new building began.
In 1838 the church was built and consecrated. Karl Bryullov decorated the altar with his big picture. The lower part of the altar was decorated with the canvas by the great German painter Hans Holbein. In 1863, the church appeared bells, made in Germany.
In 1883 the church was restored by the Russian architect and engineer Rudolf Bogdanovich Bernhard.
In 1895 - 1897 during the overhaul the interior interiors of the church were changed thanks to the work of the Russian architect Maximilian Mesmaher. In front of the building were installed the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul (copies of the works of the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen).

After the socialist revolution of 1917, many parishioners of the Lutheran Church of Saints Peter and Paul immigrated, and those who remained were persecuted by the communist authorities. In 1937 the church was closed, the pastors Paul and Bruno Reicherty were arrested, and in 1938 they were shot.

In 1994, the church was returned to the faithful and restored.
