Not far from the same embankment of the Fontanka River there is another magnificent cathedral - the Trinity-Izmailovo Cathedral (Trinity Cathedral). Until the construction of this cathedral in this place in 1733 there was a marching-tent temple of the Life Guards of the Izmaylovo Regiment, installed and moved depending on the location of the Izmailovsky Regiment itself. In 1754 a wooden church was built and all services were held in it until the time when the temple was destroyed the flood of 1824.
Today the cathedral acquired its present appearance, thanks to the project of the architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov, who, with the support of Metropolitan Seraphim in 1828, laid the foundation for the temple. This temple was built on personal money of Emperor Nicholas the First and some state funds. Construction lasted four years.
In 1835, the Metropolitan of Moscow Philaret consecrated the temple. Since then, the Trinity Cathedral has become a permanent church in St. Petersburg. In the Soviet years, government tried to be closed and demolish the temple, but the faithful people defended the temple.
But there were tragic events in the fate of the temple. In 2006, during the restoration of the dome of the temple, fire occurred and the dome was destroyed by fire.
Many people from all over the world donated money to restore the temple's dome. Pope Benedict 16th donated 10 thousand euro from his personal resources, the St. Petersburg government allocated about 2 million dollars, and ordinary people carried their money as a contribution to the restoration of the temple.
Restoration lasted about eight years and was completed by early 2017.
The dome was not only restored, but it is even more beautiful.
We met with you another beautiful architectural structure of St. Petersburg - the Trinity-Izmailovsky Cathedral. Thank you and look forward to new walks around the city.
the cathedral looks awesome and the restoration work is magnificent, this is excellent work
Yes, very long and carefully conducted restoration work. But now it all looks great.
The Trinity Cathedral looked magnificent in the photo. Yet, I'm surprised that it remains standing till this day considering it is located at St. Petersburgh and we all know how the state treats religion. I guess this is the power of faith at work. Hopefully it will last longer so the next generation could continue admire this architectural marvel. Thanks for sharing the photo and the historical facts about the cathedral @megamax.
In Russia, they are very careful and faithful to the faith. Monuments and churches under special protection of the state.
Awesome Cathedral!!
It's really a pity that it burned by fire. The reconstruction procedure really makes the temple more beautiful. I know by experience how someone feels when he is visiting holy places that had been destroyed by fire. This photo is from a temle in Skete Saint Andreas in Athos that was destroyed by fire and rebuild.
May the God bless all the people who give an effort to this work.
Very interesting post @megamax, congratulations!!!
It's wonderful that people help to restore monuments, and not to break them.

The shade of blue that they used on on the dome of the cathedral was such a good choice, it stands out without being overbearing. Glad they were able to recover from the fire!
