Near the Bolsheokhtinsky bridge on the left bank of the Neva on Smolnaya Embankment there is a very beautiful architectural structure - the Smolny Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
Empress Elizabeth Petrovna (daughter of Peter the Great) in the 1740s ordered to build a monastery on the site of the palace, where she spent her young years. The monastery complex was to include a church with churches and an institute for girls from noble families.
The architect of the construction of the cathedral was the famous Russian architect of Italian origin Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli. The cathedral was laid in October 1748. Since 1749, together with Rastrelli, the architect Christian Knobel worked on the construction of the cathedral.
In 1751, all the preparatory and foundation work was completed. Soon the "Seven Years War" began with Prussia and the financing of construction ceased. Since 1762, the Russian architect Yury Matveevich Felten was invited to decorate the cathedral.
The opening of the Smolny Institute took place in June 1764, the Smolny Cathedral was completed by the Russian architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov only in 1835.
In 1931 the Smolny Cathedral was closed (a museum was established there) and was opened for believers only in 2009.
You have learned about another monument of architecture and religion of St. Petersburg. I'm waiting for you again on a walk in the city.
