The next masterpiece of creativity of Stackenschneider is the Mariinsky Palace, located on Isakievskaya Square.
Before the construction of the Mariinsky Palace, on this site there was a palace belonging to General-Field Marshal Ivan Grigoryevich Chernyshev. The Chernyshov Palace was built according to the project of Jean-Baptiste Vallin-Delamot in 1762 - 1768. In the walls of the palace from 1825 to 1839 there was the Nikolayev Cavalry School.
The palace was built in 1839 - 1844 according to the project of the architect Andrei Ivanovich Stakenshneider for the daughter of Emperor Nicholas I - Maria Nikolaevna, who married the Duke of Leuchtenberg (Maximilian Joseph Eugene Augustus Napoleon Beauharnais). Since 1845, the Mariinsky Palace has become the official residence of the princes of Leuchtenberg in St. Petersburg.

Since February 1917 in the building of the Mariinsky Palace was the Provisional Government of Russia. After the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, the Mariinsky Palace was occupied by the People's Commissariat, and later barracks were placed in it.
Since 1929 the hostel of the Academy of National Economy was located here.
After the Great Patriotic War from 1945 to 1991, the building of the Mariinsky Palace was occupied by the Leningrad City Council.
Since 1993, the Mariinsky Palace is the seat of the meeting of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg.
