Professor Riazul Huq of the Department of Development Studies was suspended temporarily by a syndicate meeting on the night of 27 February. Eminent gender expert Prof Sadeka Halim said in the first light that he had seen the pictures and contents of Professor Riazul Haque's lecture. None of these can be indecent. According to him, this debate has raised questions about gender-related education.
Proposing to review the decision, 10 teachers of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, in a letter to the Syndicate on 14 March, told them that they have to make educations using the references, writings and teaching methods used in the whole world on women and gender issues. In that case, they have to discuss some things in the class, which may seem objectionable to the traditional conservative values.
Teachers' question, 'But even in the highest level, will we surrender like surrender of syllabus debate in primary education, or will we decide what to do, and what is uncomfortable, what is desirable and what to do next?'
Confirming the letter received from the teachers, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said the committee will take a decision after considering all the issues.
Gender courses are taught in various categories in different names. The course that Professor Riazul Huq took was 'Gender and Development'. Lastly he taught the courses in the evening session of a batch of Bangladesh Bank. Riazul Haque said, 'They all are job-free. Professor Riaz said that no one had asked him about any course or students of the department or student adviser. He questioned why these allegations are being made after so many days after the end of the course. His claim, someone from the personal rage had decorated it against him.
When contacted, Professor Mohammad Abu Yusuf, the chairman of the department, told that the investigation is going on. So he does not want to talk about this.
