Art is in many ways a method of expressing feelings that are difficult to talk about. Ruptures, which is an exhibit currently on display at the Des Moines Art Center in Des Moines, Iowa, really hits the nail on the head with how much of the world is feeling right now. With the disruption of much of the world economy, and the rapid shifts in socio-political spheres, there is this sense of unease. These artists do not point to any particular events, but rather in thier art attempt to evoke the visceral feelings that one experiences in the midst of chaos.
The Order of Things, 2016
Lauren Fensterstock
This piece is my favorite, the way the shells and shapes merge into the wood really gives off this feeling of ruin. As though this is something you might find in the home of a long lost and gone family. I love the balance of weight here as well, those stalagmite shapes really draw the eye around the piece. It has an almost gentle look, with dark undertones.
AK-47 vs. M16, 2015
Propeller Group
This work really embodies those feelings of falling apart. The shot into the glass seems at any moment it could erupt, and shatter into a million tiny pieces. I love that they have captured something so destructive and managed to put it on display for the world. It seems very symbolic of the way chaos in the world it put on display to its people, yet there is nothing we can do to stop it. The cracks and fissures in the glass are beautiful, the linear movement of the bullet across the space really captures the imagination.
#Dispersions (no.4)(detail), 2013
Anne Wilson
Dispersions is even more beautiful in person as it is actually thread and cloth. That circle in the middle is a cut out, and the black stitching surrounding it is hair. The use of material in this piece is what really sells it for me. It has a delicate appearance, but learning that it is made with hair can be quite a shock.
Let me know if you have seen these works in person, or if you plan to visit them. This particular exhibition is lovely and really touches on some serious issues afflicting America presently. Let me know your thoughts on Rupture!
