Charlottenburg. One of Berlins richest districts.
Hotels, corporate buildings, malls...
You could call the area around "Kurfürstendamm" the business heart of Berlin.
"Kurfürstendamm" is a main road in Berlin, characterized by trade and gastronomy, location for international fashion brands, companies, sights and one of the tourist destinations of west Berlin.
And somewhere between it all in a crossroad:
THE HAUS
"THE HAUS" (eng. house) was an extrordinary art project.
The inventors, this guys:
The "Dixons". They are a so called Berlin "Street-Art-Combo"
They rented an old bank building for interim use. A few month before it should get demolished by the actual owner.
Their idea was: coloring every inch of it. Inside and out.
5 floors, about 10.000 square meters, over 100 rooms and over 170 artist from all over the world
The artist had no rules. They just got a room and the instructions to do whatever they want.
But there was a problem. Their time was limited. They had only about 3 month to color the whole house. And everything they were going to create would be destroyed forever a couple of month later.
In April 2017 "THE HAUS" was opened for visitors and in June 2017 the house got demolished.
But the artists were fine with it. There was something special for them about their art being temporary.
For them, the destruction was a part of it, it just shows that street art is never forever.
There's always something final to it.
sponsors payed for materials, drinks and accomodation for the artists & so they had a lot of possibilities to be creative and realize their visions.
And it turned out fantastic!
The house was full of different artistic directions. Every room was a complete different and new experience.
Graffitis, light installations, the whole room painted, the whole room dark, sculptures, photographs, the whole room taped, there was even a room with moss in it.
There were rooms with live performances and on and on.
Everything you could imagine!
they even painted the bathrooms
There were so many interesting and faszinating ideas and concepts.
The entry was free. And only 200 people could stay in the house at the same time.
The queue was accordingly long. I have been there myself and I waited around 2 hours to get in. But it was amazing. Totaly worth it.
they did stuff with threads at this one.
I think "THE HAUS" was a really good way to get people closer to art who are not really interested in it in the first place.
I've been there with two children (internship) and they did absolutely not feel like visiting a "museum" but when we got in they were overwhelmed and excited the whole time.
it looked really surrealistic in some of the rooms. Sometimes you kinda lost orientation because everything looked similar and you couldn't see doors or windows
here you can see moss in the room!
By the way, it was not allowed to take photos inside "THE HAUS". When you got in you had to put your mobile phone in a plastic bag. I mean, you could take it with you and there was the chance to take it out and take photos anyway but the artists kind of asked you to not do it. Their idea was that you feel the rooms and that you get aware of the art. They wanted the people to actually visit and be there in person instead of looking at photos over the internet.
Then where do all the photos come from you might ask.
All I know is, that I took them out of the internet for this article.
Maybe some people took photos anyway. But most of the images you can see here actually are from some documentary videos about "THE HAUS" or they were included in an article some journal wrote about it (they were allowed to take photos).
also the creators published a book (you could buy after the exhibition got closed) with photos in it.
In the end, it was a wonderful and inspiring experience for me. And I am really happy to live in a city like Berlin where dudes like the "Dixons" get ideas like that and let you visit their creations.
Thank you for reading my article! I hope you enjoyed.
the end - forever ("THE HAUS" website)
