Overkillcoin Tank: Work in progress
After the great feedback I got from my last pixel art, I figured I'd try out a tank instead. This is based on the Russian T-34 tank from the early 1940s. I made the barrel a lot thicker than the original — for more explosion power.
Animation plans
Last time, the SteemRoller was crushing a logo. This time, I want the tank to shoot logos. However, unless the tank shoots logos at point blank range, it would add a lot of vertical space to the layout. I'd like the tank to shoot across a horizontal banner to hit the logos.
How can this be done? The tank turret has to turn first!
3d reference modeling
A tank turret isn't a simple piece of geometry like a cube or sphere, and turning the turret would be a hassle to accurately hand-draw. So, I decided to create a 3d model of the turret. It's rough, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it...
Let me show you the animated reference
This short reference animation has 45 frames. There's no way I'd hand trace that many frames, I'm guessing I'll trace from 8 - 10 and just let the animation be choppy. This is okay, as pixel art animations are typically a bit choppy, like those cool old games — I miss those days!
Next steps - Stay tuned!
After cleaning up the layered pixels, I'll start tracing the turrets. After colorizing, I'll need to create stages of the cannon fire and exploding logos. This is a potentially fun project and I'm really looking forward to finishing it.
Thanks. This helps a lot on how you do it. Looks like plenty of hours and knowledge goes into this as well as creativity.
The trick is (or needs to be) doing these with greater efficiency...
Thanks!
AMAZING! What software did you use for the reference model?
I have an old copy of StudioMax
