I have long had an admiration for photography and photo artists. I have held an even greater appreciation for film and screenwriting for as long as I can remember. However, recently I have found myself perusing the internet looking at the glorious nature of paintings and murals. I wish I had discovered this appetite for finer art sooner. Oh well better late than never.
There is something very unique and special when you begin to study paintings by artists who really know what they're doing. There is so much more effort that is invested by the artists into a painting than taking a photo. This is not to undermine or debase in any way the value and skill of photo artists, as you know I am a huge supporter of photography.
But when it comes to paint works we are dealing with a different creature here. What I also like about paintings is the way in which they are formed and brought to life whether on canvas, paper or glass etc. And the different paints involved, acrylics or oil for example with watercolour being one of my favourites.
The whole world of painting should be appreciated more and that is why I am going to start sharing more of the paintworks that I discover. I think paintings are undervalued and underrated and this needs to change and I intend to do my bit.
Just take a look at this painting by Thomas Moran from the 1860's. The painting depicts a night scene on the river but despite the lack of natural light for that time of day the painting is rich and vibrant in night colours.

That sky is stunning, which is visible thanks to the moon just peaking out from behind the trees to illuminate the dark blue and green light effect of the sky which is just beautiful. Have a look at the intricate detail that the painter has worked into those trees, they look incredibly life like. Again the water shimmers with beauty and realism.
See the boat nestled on the water, glowing, with its inhabitants enjoying a party of some description. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of skill and effort required to produce a painting as beautiful and engaging as this one.
All of this and more is so soothing to the mind and soul. As I get older I think I am appreciating paintings more than photos and films. And I am absolutely fine with that.

I am a paintings lover, especially the oil painted ones. I had made a couple of paintings in the past, my aunt taught me.
I wish I could have so much more time to do that again.
This darker and almost fantasy style you share here it's my favourite. There's a museum in Berlin with a lot of paintings by artists that are now associated to the gothic and romantic culture and they have this style. But I'm not an expert
Good to see you also appreciate paintings @harbiter. I find great beauty in them. Yes, I am also a great admirer of oil paintings, I actually can't decide which I prefer - oil or watercolour.
The picture isn't really anything to do with gothic it's just that the painting depicts a scene at night time with a boat party taking place so is naturally more inclined towards darker colours. But what light there is in the painting gives us enough detail to truly appreciate the fine details of the scene.
