The world's greatest treasury of art sprawls in the heart of Paris. It is maintained by taxes. It has more than 3,000000 visitors per annum. Plans are underway to double its exhibition area. The Louvre has no rivals and on exhibition are not only art, but also artifacts. It's one of the largest palaces ever built. It has 8 entrances and the exterior and interior are absolutely astounding.
The first view of the interior is that of a cavernous hall. It was in fact a riding school. This was well over a century ago. Tours are undertaken by extremely knowledgeable guides and that's not all, you can choose the language you prefer as you embark on this adventure.
Ghosts of kings and angry rebels are on display in the Grande Galerie, the largest of more than 200 exhibit rooms. Rebellious soldiers bivouaced here in1848, their camp stoves endangering precious works of art. Venus de Milo ranks high amongst the world's famous women. The first record of her dates back to 1820. Another highlight is that of the winged' Victory of Samothrace ' These statues are priceless.
The Louvre's vast collection of Greek and Roman antiquities encompasses more than 20,000 objects, such as coins, jewelry, gods and goddesses, warriors, senators and horses. All done in bronze, marble and clay. Egyptian antiquities have exotic statues, mummies and artifacts sent to Paris by Napoleon's agents in the wake of his conquering armies.
The first Lady of the Louvre is of course Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. This was a dearly, cherished portrait with it's gentle emphasis women's intellectual and emotional sensitivity. Executed between 1503 and 1506, it accompanied him in all of his travels. Another few statues include Essence of Woman, Long necked idol, Handmaiden of the dead, Greek ideal of beauty,
Medieval mysticism, Saint Sebastian etc.
Surpassing all of these in fame is the department of paintings. In 50 galleries, 15 are devoted to French art, about 3000 paintings on display. No matter what one's favourite, almost every visitor drifting along with the crowd finds him / herself before a face they had seen before. Even antique furniture are on display. A wardrobe with ornamentation, beautiful detail of the French furniture makers of the time. A particular one was made for Louis 16th during his reign.
What do the visitors have to say on exiting this amazing place? If only I had more time!! All leave highly impressed and in awe of their experience with beautiful historical art works.
It is an extraordinary place, it takes several days if you want to do all the galleries.
