This one happened quickly! I had said in the previous post that I was going to do the romance novel cover piece with a dog and skunk, but I messed up some compositional components, and couldn't find photo resources I would have needed to fill the gaps. So I decided not to waste time, and to move onto the next, sourcing what I needed for the past one at the same time.
Success! Although, instead of romance novel cover images, I'm going to use the pottery scene from Ghost for the dog/skunk romance.
I think the reason this one was so fast to finish is that I've painted so many iterations of The Girl with the Pearl Earring. The first time I painted her, it was a two-hour gig at the Tarragon Theatre, in the lobby. There was a show on called Bakelite, about an artist who made counterfeit copies of priceless art pieces to be destroyed by the nazis instead of the original. He was on trial, and had to prove that the pieces he handed over were actually counterfeits, and not the originals by creating a piece in front of the adjudicator.
So my job that night was to recreate from scratch, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, to show how difficult it would be to make passable copies.
Following that, I painted a parody of her that I called 'The Girl with the Gauged Earring'
and then 'The Squirrel with the Pearl Earring'
I made about six copies of the squirrel. One medium sized, and five miniature. Originally it was just one mini, but someone went and commissioned several of her, and I ultimately decided to make a larger one, which also sold right away. I've had really good fortune with Vermeer's famous piece.
Show set-up date is on the 7th, so I have a little more time to get one, or maaaaybe two pieces done. Here's hoping! And then I'm going to slow down just slightly. Get some sleep. Zzzzzzzzz.
